We ask for a commitment of 2 counselling sessions per week, plus the necessary supervision and CPD to support this.

Are you a qualified relationship counsellor looking to volunteer just a few hours each week to help us provide professional relationship counselling to those in need - regardless of their ability to pay?

What will you be doing?

We are looking for qualified relationship counsellors to join our friendly local centres across England and Wales and provide just 2 hours of counselling per week to couples in your local area.

Marriage Care is a faith-based national charity providing nearly 6,500 relationship counselling sessions each year from 100 locations in England, Wales and Gibraltar. All our centres and services are run by volunteers and this means that we can provide counselling sessions on a donation basis, ensuring that everyone can access the support they need.

Our volunteer counsellors benefit from ongoing CPD, supervision as well as local/regional support groups, travel expenses and insurance and the knowledge that you are supporting couples in their toughest times.

What are we looking for?

Marriage Care counsellors come from a wide range of backgrounds, but all share a genuine desire to help people in distress. We welcome applications from people who share our passion for relationship health and who respect and are willing to engage with our values.

Whilst applicants may be single or in a relationship, what is important is that they:

  • Are qualified relationship counsellor
  • Show insight into how they are within relationships and are able to make use of this effectively,
  • Have experience of healthy close personal relationships during their lives,
  • Are able to commit to long term volunteering.

Due to all of the above our applicants are usually over the age of 30.

What difference will you make?

The quality of a couple's relationship has wide-reaching and enduring effects - on their families, their children and society. A wealth of evidence now shows that healthy, stable couple relationships benefit us not only mentally and emotionally but even physically.

Here are a few quotes from our clients about how Marriage Care counselling has helped their relationship:

‘Saved our marriage, healed us together and individually and helped us pass the healing to our family’.

‘We were re-introduced to the concepts of compromise and sacrifice and this helped us to realise how much depended on communicating well with each other’.

‘The counsellor was a total Godsend – I’m so grateful. Gave us the chance to open up to each other and we feel so much stronger’.

What's in it for the volunteer?

Volunteering with Marriage Care is a truly rewarding experience and you will find support from like- minded people within your centre team and opportunities to increase your professional knowledge and skills through regional and national training. More experienced counsellors also have opportunities to train and develop as a supervisor or trainer.

Many of our volunteers stay with the organisation for a number of years due to the relationships they develop and the rewarding work.
