People that take their own lives are not defined by their death. Our purpose is to support the suicide bereaved; we aim to change societal perception of suicide, impact its prevalence, and eliminate the stigma it attracts.
We have created a shared online space that is designed to help people in the UK who are bereaved by suicide. It is a place for families and friends to express their love and care through the images, words and videos of lives shared. It is a community that has lived experience of profound and complex grief. Working alongside us, we want you to help them feel less alone, connect them with people who have similar experience, and access suicide bereavement support that is timely, robust, safe and compassionate.
One of the key functions on our site is to create a Memorial Page for someone lost to suicide – the page can include various combinations of text, image and video. Many of the creators are parents of young people and young adults – they have clips of video of their lost sons and daughters which have significant meaning but are not necessarily high quality. These clips cannot now be replaced. Your role will be to improve the video clips as much as possible: sometimes editing one or more together; sometimes editing out poor sections; occasionally changing the format; occasionally adding music. The suicide bereaved community is, by definition, vulnerable; so mature, warm-hearted management of the people connected to these precious visual memories is a prerequisite for success in the role.
As a small team, there will be very little oversight. We do not expect to work together in an office, and we all work autonomously. We do, however, expect to support each other, and use virtual meeting tools to stay closely in touch.
We also each define our roles. We are, as mentioned, a start-up, so there is no legacy model to follow. The opportunity allows the successful applicant to build out the role to suit their own way of working.
5. Creativity – knowing what scenes to cut, and which to mesh together
6. Flexibility – adapting to the needs and skillsets of the page creators who will, in most cases, not be familiar with what is possible
7. Visual acuity – frame by frame care with an eye for detail and the focus to work accurately
In the simplest possible terms, you will help save lives. People bereaved from suicide are at an increased risk of dying from suicide themselves – by supporting them, we significantly mitigate that risk. As importantly, by amplifying their experience, we help spread the word that suicide impacts all kinds of people across all types of communities. You will never know how many lives you have helped to save through this work, but you will find out that your contribution is life-saving.
