What will you be doing?

As Vice President of the Surrey Poet Laureateship, you will work closely with the President to help lead the UK’s first county laureateship. This role is integral to the day-to-day running of the organisation and supports our mission to promote poetry, creativity, and community engagement across Surrey.

You’ll be involved in key decision-making, team coordination, and project planning. You’ll help oversee our events, outreach initiatives, and internal operations, acting as a second-in-command to the President. This is a collaborative leadership role ideal for someone who enjoys working with people, solving problems, and bringing vision to life.

Typical responsibilities include:

  • Supporting the President in strategic and operational tasks
  • Chairing meetings or attending in the President’s absence
  • Helping oversee volunteer and officer activities
  • Contributing to long-term planning and growth initiatives
  • Acting as a key point of contact for the team and partners

You’ll also have the opportunity to shape the future of a historic and rapidly growing organisation that uses poetry to empower voices and connect communities.

Essential skills and qualities:

  • Strong organisational and communication skills
  • Leadership or coordination experience (formal or informal)
  • A flexible, problem-solving mindset and a hands-on approach
  • Confidence in working with diverse people and teams
  • Ability to support or step in for the President as needed
  • Experience in charity governance, event planning, or team management

Desirable (but not required):

  • Knowledge of Surrey’s cultural or community networks
  • A passion for poetry, literature, or community arts

Please note: The successful applicant must be able to reliably commute to our HQ at the Egham Literary Institute building, where key meetings and activities are held.
