Welcome to Reach Volunteering. We are a community and registered charity that connects people, skills and good causes.

To apply for this role, and any other on our platform, you need to be based in the UK, have at least three years of experience using the skills you wish to volunteer in a professional capacity or have lived experience (for trustee roles). Read more about our criteria.

The UK's youth movement for people with refugee backgrounds to build community, become leaders and flourish in the place they call home.

What will you be doing?

As we embark on an ambitious 3-year strategy, we’re looking for passionate and skilled trustees to join our Board and help shape the next chapter of our journey.

With residential trips, leadership training, youth hubs, and one-to-one support, we are creating a peer-led social movement, and have welcomed over 500 young people from 47 different countries on our programmes since 2018.

The next few years for OSH will be about:

Growing our impact

As well as our bases in London and Bristol, we intend to have 3 new regional OSH Hubs in the UK. We also want to deepen our impact in the places where we are already active.

Creating pathways for leadershipWe pride ourselves on offering meaningful leadership opportunities for the communities we serve, and want to expand these, and be thought leaders across the sector on lived experience leadership.

Embedding our culture

Our ambition of growing into an organisation with national scope cannot come at the cost of diluting the things make our activities so special. We will embed a culture that is robust and can withstand organisational transition.

A new income generation plan

We rely on trusts and foundations for three quarters of the funds to do our work. To unlock the growth that we want, we must have a more diverse mix of funding streams with donors and partners to make this possible.

What are we looking for?

We are particularly looking for trustees with these backgrounds

  • Fundraising, including statutory and corporate funding
  • Youth leadership development
  • Monitoring, Evaluation & Learning
  • An interest in stepping up to chair the Board of Trustees

ABOUT YOU

  • A commitment to OSH’s mission, values, and safeguarding principles.
  • Proven leadership experience.
  • Commitment to the Nolan Principles of good governance: honesty, integrity, objectivity, accountability, selflessness, openness and leadership
  • An understanding of governance principles and best practices.
  • Being an approachable and proactive communicator.
  • Ability to think creatively and strategically, exercise good, independent judgement and work effectively as a board member and leader.
  • A willingness to act as an advocate for OSH.
  • Ability to allocate the necessary time and dedication to fulfil the role's responsibilities, include preparing for and attending trustee meetings and events.

What you gain – being a trustee is an opportunity to:

  • Help shape the future of a growing, impactful organisation.
  • Make a meaningful difference in the lives of young refugees and asylum seekers.
  • Develop new skills and gain experience in charity governance.
  • Join a collaborative and inspiring team of trustees, staff, and volunteers.

Our Second Home is an equal opportunity organisation, committed to fostering diversity and inclusion. We particularly encourage applications from underrepresented groups, particularly those who have lived experience of the asylum system.

What difference will you make?

Through our new strategy, we aim to become the fastest-growing youth charity in the refugee sector – one that places inclusion, empowerment, and impact at the heart of everything that we do. This progress would not be possible without the leadership and dedication of our trustees.

You will help us to reach 1,000 young people a year with refugee backgrounds by 2028.

Before you apply

Please provide a CV and a cover letter detailing why you are interested in this role and your relevant experience. Interviews will be an informal Zoom chat with CEO and trustees.
