Welcome to Reach Volunteering. We are a community and registered charity that connects people, skills and good causes.

To apply for this role, and any other on our platform, you need to be based in the UK, have at least three years of experience using the skills you wish to volunteer in a professional capacity or have lived experience (for trustee roles). Read more about our criteria.

The Herb Society, founded in 1927, promotes the use and enjoyment of herbs.

We're currently recruiting trustees to join our team, particularly if you have experience with social media or website design/development.

What will you be doing?

We'd love to hear from people that have an interest in herbs, whether amateur or professional. We have a lot of projects planned for the next few years, so we're interested in hearing from people who have not only the skills that we are looking for, but the capacity to commit their time to the Society.

Skills and qualities

  • Commitment to The Herb Society
  • Integrity
  • A willingness to devote the necessary time and effort to their duties as a Trustee
  • Ability to take decisions for the good of The Herb Society
  • Sensitivity to the feelings and views of The Herb Society membership
  • Good communication skills
  • Willingness to speak one’s mind and listen to the views of others
  • An ability to work effectively as a member of a team and to lead sub-committees, if required
  • Understand the legal responsibilities and liabilities of a trustee
  • Be eligible under law to act as a Trustee/Director

Desirable experience

  • Knowledge of the type of work undertaken by The Herb Society
  • Knowledge of one or more areas of The Herbs Societies fields of interest, for example herbal medicine, culinary use of herbs, aromatherapy.  Alternatively, a Trustee may bring specialist knowledge relating to the operational, legal or financial aspects of a charity or company.

Time consideration

  • The Council of Trustees meets once per month, on the second Monday of the month at 4pm online
  • An AGM of The Society Members is held once per year
  • In addition to Council Meetings, other contact – usually via email or WhatsApp – will be necessary
  • The time commitment for a Trustee is expected to be 1-2 days per month on average, although we have a lot of projects we are currently working on, so we're likely to need people who can commit to 3-5 days per month.

What are we looking for?

We would like to hear from people with an interest in herbs, whether amateurs or professionals.

We're particularly interested in people with experience with social media or web design/development.

We need people that can commit their time regularly to the duties of a trustee. This includes attending online meetings, communicating with other council members and support staff via email and WhatsApp and attending an annual AGM.

What difference will you make?

Becoming a trustee of The Herb Society offers a unique opportunity to make a lasting impact on both the Society and the broader herbal community. As a trustee, you will play a crucial role in shaping the strategic direction and ensuring the financial stability of the charity, while safeguarding its values and reputation. You will be part of a dedicated team, applying your skills and expertise to help achieve the Society's goals and objectives.

The Herb Society is nearing its 100th anniversary, so it's an exciting time to join our team. We will be working on projects to improve our website, digitise our archive and work to find ways to engage more fully with current members while also attracting new members along the way.

If you enjoy using herbs in any way - medicinal, culinary, gardening, foraging, herbal folklore, crafts, etc. and you feel that you have the skills that we need to contribute to the continued success of the Society as it nears its 100th year, we'd love to hear from you.

Before you apply

Please apply through Reach in the first instance. Candidates will be asked to provide a CV. If we feel that your experience fits the role, we will ask to meet with you via Zoom.
