Welcome to Reach Volunteering. We are a community and registered charity that connects people, skills and good causes.

To apply for this role, and any other on our platform, you need to be based in the UK, have at least three years of experience using the skills you wish to volunteer in a professional capacity or have lived experience (for trustee roles). Read more about our criteria.

Become a trustee of a thriving community hub in the beautiful Carnegie Library.  We’re looking for 3 local trustees in early 2025 to empower us to execute the next phase of our hub strategy, including senior Charity Treasurer and Secretary.

What will you be doing?

The Carnegie Community Trust CIO trades as the Carnegie Library Hub which is a community hub that runs alongside the library and gym, both run by Lambeth local authority.  We are undergoing a stage of expansion, increasing the utilization of the rooms, understanding what the community wants as well as looking for financially viable options to secure the future of the building for the use of the community.  We currently host 30 partners who run regular community centered events as well as many more one-off community hires.  As we’ve recently (January 2025) been offered a lease by Lambeth, we have the freedom to move forward with our strategy to support the community and the building, and therefore implicitly the cherished library therein.

We are therefore seeking inspiring individuals of all backgrounds with lived experience of being in our community, who live within 2 miles of the Hub, are interested in becoming a trustee, and who can demonstrate:

·       Interest in community betterment, heritage and our mission, vision and values.

·       Have experience and skills to bear as described below.

·       An interest and commitment to governing and supervising our strategy.

Previous trustee experience is not essential in all appointments.

What are we looking for?

All experience and viewpoints are valid for effective governance; however, we are particularly interested in local people with (current skill gaps we’re looking to fill are marked in bold)

  • Heritage, local planning, architectural, buildings or property management experience.
  • Marketing, Communication and Graphic Design.
  • Funding bids or fundraising strategies.
  • Experience running a (small) business, business development and sales.
  • Experience with charitable, local authorities or commercial organisations.
  • Deep connections with local community groups, local organisation and local sole traders.
  • Human Resources, Safeguarding, Health and Safety, Fire and Compliance.
  • Food and beverage trading experience.
  • Technology and digital.
  • Strategic development and planning.

What difference will you make?

There are many elements from participation that enrich the lives of our existing trustees and team:

·       To improve the social cohesion and community offerings for the local places we serve, namely Brixton, Loughborough Junction, Camberwell, Dulwich and Herne Hill.

·       To influence and continue to grow the success of our community hub and community business.

·       Support the viability of the glorious grade II listed building and consequently support the cherished library within.

·       Direct resources to initiatives that align with our mission but also simultaneously resonate with your own values.

·       Shared teamwork and purpose with staff, trustees, Lambeth Council officers, the librarians, the community and our partners who all contribute significantly to the hub.

These are just some examples of the benefits of getting involved in our community business.

Before you apply

Please send your CV and a short email cover telling us why you would be a good candidate to info@carnegielibraryhub.org.uk.  Applicants should live within 2 miles of the Hub.  We welcome any conversations for interested parties to garner interest and answer any questions, for example talk to members already in post.
