Small independent arts charity needs a trustee and treasurer to join the board to provide leadership and support as the organisation seeks to rebuild core funding and embark on major capital fundraising.
The organisation currently has a turnover of around £120-£150k per year, but this has failed to keep pace with inflation and reflects a decline in real terms of about 40% over the past 15 years. The Trust aims to recover this position which would require us to increase our revenue funding to around £200-£250k per year, whilst also look to build a significant level of capital reserves for refurbishment of our 170 year old Grade II listed building.
We currently employ two members of staff and plan to recruit one further in the coming months giving a total of 2.5 FTE. The board is comprised of 8 trustees with a range of skills and experiences. An attached café/bar is constituted as a Limited company wholly owned by the charity but run by a separate board of directors, it makes a modest contribution to the charity’s funds.
We are currently seeking to recruit a volunteer Treasurer to join our Board of Trustees to play a vital role in ensuring our continued financial stability. As well as being available for regular board meetings additional time commitment would be expected to help define and drive the execution of the financial elements of our strategy and monitor and support our staff in areas of financial management.
The Space is a small theatre on the Isle of Dogs in east London, managed by the St Paul’s Arts Trust (registered charity no 801587). Founded in 1996, in what was then a disused church building, our aim as an organisation is to increase access to the arts for our local community and provide support for emerging artists.
We seek to provide creative opportunities for local residents to engage with the arts and a mentoring programme for on-going artistic development. Current activities include live performances (both at our venue and Canary Wharf’s Roof Garden), theatre and writing workshops through our participatory theatre project and other community projects, arts festivals and free special events. For more information regarding our current activities please go to our website at space.org.uk.
The Treasurer will be critical to our ability to maintain our existing activities and to develop our vision further and ensure we can sustain this into the future. The charity's activities have been lauded by both local people and the arts community as providing unique opportunities that other organisations often overlook. We have a a well deserved reputation for the work we do - being a small organisation means we are able to adapt to opportunities and needs very quickly and every volunteer and staff member plays a vital and noticeable role.
Please apply through Reach and supply a CV and covering letter. Interviews will take place in November/December and will initially be via an informal meeting or online chat followed by face to face meeting with 2-3 trustees for short listed candidates,
