Join our Halifax-based homeless charity as a Trustee, providing vital property expertise. Help us protect vulnerable individuals and make a difference in our community by ensuring a safe and supportive environment.

What will you be doing?

Our homeless charity in Halifax is navigating significant challenges as we strive to support vulnerable individuals in a constantly evolving environment. We are seeking a passionate and committed individual to join our board of trustees, bringing property expertise to help guide our organisation as we grow and adapt.

As a trustee with property expertise, you will play a crucial role in overseeing and advising on matters related to property management, acquisitions, leases, and development. Your knowledge will be key in ensuring that our charity’s assets are managed efficiently and sustainably, while helping to navigate the complexities of housing regulations and property law.

Key challenges include overseeing the renovation of a new building that will provide seven intensively supported accommodation for those in need. Our property trustee will also play a key role in guiding the relocation of our head office into a community hub building. We manage a mix of supported accommodation and independent flats. You will provide strategic input on property-related decisions and collaborate closely with our management team to ensure all our facilities meet the highest standards of care, safety, and compliance.

We are particularly looking for someone who can offer practical property management advice while contributing to the overall governance and strategic direction of our charity. Your expertise will not only guide the board but also strengthen our capacity to provide safe, secure, and dignified housing solutions for those in need.

What are we looking for?

We are seeking a trustee who brings a blend of professional expertise and personal qualities that align with our mission to provide secure and stable housing for people experiencing homelessness. The ideal candidate will have significant experience in property management, real estate, or housing, with a proven track record in overseeing property portfolios, acquisitions, or development projects. Knowledge of relevant legislation, compliance requirements, and best practices in property management, especially in the charity or social housing sector, is essential.

In addition to technical expertise, we are looking for a strategic thinker who can assess risks, maximize opportunities, and offer guidance on optimising the use of our property assets. This trustee will work at both governance and operational levels, contributing to decisions on property investments, maintenance, and future developments. Experience in advising or serving on boards, particularly in a trustee or senior leadership capacity, is highly valued, as is an understanding of the unique challenges and opportunities within the housing and charitable sectors.

We value empathy, integrity, and a commitment to our cause. The successful candidate will be passionate about providing safe housing for vulnerable populations and will bring strong communication and leadership skills to engage effectively with staff, volunteers, service members, and external stakeholders. The ability to make informed decisions, build consensus, and foster positive change is crucial to this role, as is a proactive approach to problem-solving.

Finally, we seek someone with a balance of compassion and pragmatism, capable of navigating the complexities of managing property for a charity serving vulnerable individuals. A commitment to ongoing learning and staying informed about changes in property regulations and best practices is important. This trustee will be instrumental in helping us manage our property assets responsibly, ensuring that our services continue to provide safety, stability, and dignity to those we support.

What difference will you make?

The Property Trustee will have a transformative impact on our charity by ensuring the effective management, development, and sustainability of our property assets. Their expertise will help optimize our housing solutions for vulnerable individuals, contributing to the creation of safe, dignified, and secure environments for service users. This trustee will play a critical role in managing our real estate portfolio, providing strategic direction for property acquisitions, maintenance, and compliance, ensuring the long-term viability of our services for the homeless community. Their guidance will allow us to operate sustainably, securing safe spaces for those in need for years to come.
