Welcome to Reach Volunteering. We are a community and registered charity that connects people, skills and good causes.

To apply for this role, and any other on our platform, you need to be based in the UK, have at least three years of experience using the skills you wish to volunteer in a professional capacity or have lived experience (for trustee roles). Read more about our criteria.

Do you have previous management or trustee experience? Are you looking to make a difference for young people in your community?  TS Repulse - Rotherham Sea Cadets are seeking an enthusiastic volunteer to join our Unit Management Team.

What will you be doing?

As a member of the Unit Management Team (UMT) for the Sea Cadets, you will play a vital role in the smooth running and governance of your local unit. The UMT works behind the scenes to support the delivery of a safe, engaging, and inspiring experience for cadets. Your contribution will directly support the development of young people through nautical adventure and values-based learning.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Governance & Compliance: Ensure the unit complies with Sea Cadets policies and procedures, as well as legal and safeguarding responsibilities.
  • Support the Command Team: Work closely with the Commanding Officer and uniformed staff to provide the necessary infrastructure and support to run the unit effectively.
  • Finance & Fundraising: Oversee or assist with managing unit finances, fundraising activities, and grant applications to ensure sustainability and growth.
  • Facilities & Resources: Help maintain unit premises, equipment, and other resources, ensuring a safe and well-maintained environment for cadet activities.
  • Promoting the Unit: Represent the Sea Cadets in the local community, support recruitment of cadets and volunteers, and promote the work of the unit.
  • Meetings & Planning: Attend regular UMT meetings, contribute to decision-making, and support the development of strategic and operational plans for the unit’s success.

What You’ll Gain:

  • A sense of pride in supporting the development of young people.
  • Experience in charity governance, teamwork, and project support.
  • Opportunities to develop skills in leadership, finance, communication, and community engagement.
  • Being part of a supportive, motivated, and friendly volunteer team.

Commitment: Time commitment varies but generally involves attending monthly UMT meetings, occasional events, and offering support in your area of responsibility.

What are we looking for?

We are looking for new Trustees who have:

  • A passion for making a difference to young people and the local community
  • Good communication skills
  • An ability to work well with a team
  • Previous experience in leading, governance, management or as a Trustee/governor
  • A good understanding of how a small charity works or a willingness to learn
  • A background of working with young people, would be useful but not essential.

What difference will you make?

UMT members have a profound and lasting impact on the success of a Sea Cadets unit and the young people it serves. By providing essential support behind the scenes, the UMT helps create an environment where cadets can thrive, develop new skills, build confidence, and make lifelong memories.

Your involvement ensures that:

  • Young people have opportunities to grow: Through your support, cadets are given access to high-quality, safe, and enriching activities that build resilience, leadership, and teamwork.
  • The unit runs smoothly and sustainably: UMT members help manage the practical and financial aspects of the unit, allowing the Commanding Officer and volunteers to focus on delivering inspiring training and experiences.
  • The local community benefits: A well-run Sea Cadets unit brings positive engagement to the wider community, offering volunteering opportunities, fostering community spirit, and encouraging civic responsibility in young people.
  • Long-term viability is secured: UMT members play a critical role in fundraising, compliance, and planning, ensuring the unit is financially stable and prepared for the future.
  • Volunteer teams feel supported: By handling governance and operational matters, the UMT enables uniformed and civilian volunteers to feel supported, valued, and able to deliver their best.

In short, your work as a UMT member helps transform lives. You make it possible for cadets to flourish in a safe, structured, and fun environment — helping shape the next generation with confidence, discipline, and a sense of purpose.
