What will you be doing?

The board currently lacks the necessary expertise to fully exploit the possibilities offered by digital engagement.

Your main responsibilities as Digital Trustee would be:

  • to provide thought leadership on the role of digital in Citizens Advice Tendring’s fundraising, marketing, communications, service delivery and operations and help build and implement this vision;
  • to highlight the opportunities and the risks of digital in terms of our general strategy;
  • to translate the risks and opportunities of digital for other trustees, to enable the board as a whole to engage in an informed way;
  • to champion the use of data in board discussions, and in driving the delivery and improvement of fundraising, marketing, communications, service delivery and operations;
  • to draw on your networks to support our work;
  • to help ensure that the executive / operations teams have the digital capabilities that they need to implement the strategy.

Your main responsibilities together with the other Trustees are:

  • maintaining an awareness of the business of the local Citizens Advice;
  • taking responsibility for their own learning and development;
  • regularly attending, preparing for and taking a full part in meetings;
  • actively contributing to setting policy and strategic direction, defining goals, setting targets and evaluating performance;
  • monitoring whether the service complies with its governing document, whether it meets Citizens Advice standards and how well the advice needs of the local community are being met;
  • monitoring the financial position and ensuring that the local Citizens Advice operates within its means and objects, and that there are clear lines of accountability for day-to-day financial management;
  • supporting the development of the local Citizens Advice through participation in agreed projects;
  • actively seeking to further the strategic objectives of the local Citizens Advice, and acting in its best interests at all times;
  • maintaining confidentiality about any sensitive or confidential information received in the course of duties as a trustee.

What are we looking for?

  • experience of current agile project management practices, open source, cloud platforms and digital services;
  • commitment and availability to attend trustee board meetings;
  • ability to contribute to the process of setting objectives and managing performance;
  • effective written and verbal communication skills and willingness to participate actively in discussion;
  • evidence of the ability to apply strategic thinking;
  • commitment to the aims and principles of equal opportunities and independence of Citizens Advice;
  • ability to understand and accept their responsibilities and liabilities as trustees and employers;
  • knowledge of both the needs and resources of the Tendring area (so residence in or near the area is vital.)

  • Experience as a Trustee/School Governor/Councillor etc.
  • Experience of the charity/not for profit sector
  • Experience of leading teams

What difference will you make?

You will be utilising your I.T./Digital skills and knowledge to assist the board in planning a successful digital strategy.  This will extend the service's reach across the local community and make it better able to take advantage of future opportunities as they arise.

What's in it for the volunteer?

You will be joining a board of trustees from similar professional backgrounds who enjoy working collaboratively and welcome new ideas and fresh thinking. You'll also be part of a well-respected local charity which has for nearly 30 years provided much-appreciated advice to the people of Tendring.
