Join our Halifax-based homeless charity as a Trustee, providing vital legal expertise. Help us protect vulnerable individuals and make a real difference in our community by ensuring a safe and supportive environment.

What will you be doing?

Our homeless charity, based in Halifax, is facing critical challenges as we work to support vulnerable individuals in a constantly evolving environment. We are seeking a passionate and committed individual to join our board of trustees, bringing extensive legal expertise to help guide us through this period of growth and change.

As a trustee, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring our charity operates within legal frameworks, while advancing our mission of creating a safe, inclusive space for all who interact with our services. Your legal insight will be essential as we work to ensure compliance with regulations, navigate complex legal landscapes, and strengthen our governance structures.

Key responsibilities will include advising the board on legal matters, such as compliance with charity law, contract negotiations, and risk management.

We are particularly looking for someone who can offer strategic legal guidance while collaborating closely with our management team. Your expertise will help us make informed decisions that ensure our long-term stability and success.

By joining our board, you will not only help steer the charity’s legal direction but also inspire confidence in our ability to provide safe, high-quality, and compassionate support to those who need it most.

What are we looking for?

We are seeking a trustee with a strong legal background to help guide our charity in providing a safe, supportive environment for individuals experiencing homelessness. The ideal candidate will have in-depth knowledge of charity law, risk management, and legal compliance, particularly within the charity or housing sectors. Experience in drafting and reviewing policies, contracts, and legal frameworks is essential, as this trustee will play a key role in ensuring adherence to legal standards and best practices across the organization.

We are looking for someone who is strategic and forward-thinking, with the ability to assess legal risks and identify opportunities for improvement. This individual should be comfortable working at both governance and operational levels, providing hands-on legal advice when necessary, while offering high-level insights to shape the direction of the charity. Experience advising or working with boards, particularly in a trustee or senior leadership capacity, would be highly beneficial, as well as an understanding of the unique legal challenges facing charities that serve vulnerable populations.

Empathy, integrity, and a collaborative approach are core to this role. The successful candidate will be passionate about our mission and committed to upholding the rights and dignity of the people we support. Strong communication skills are essential, as this trustee will need to engage with a variety of stakeholders, including staff, volunteers, service members, and external partners. The ability to provide clear legal guidance, build consensus, and drive positive change is crucial, along with a proactive approach to problem-solving.

Finally, we are looking for someone who can balance legal expertise with compassion, and who possesses the resilience to tackle the challenges that come with supporting vulnerable individuals. A commitment to staying updated on changes in legislation and best practices is important, as this trustee will help the charity navigate the complexities of providing legally compliant, safe, and effective services in a constantly changing environment.

What difference will you make?

The Legal Trustee will have a transformative impact on our charity by ensuring we operate within a strong legal framework, safeguarding our mission and the vulnerable individuals we support. Their legal expertise will strengthen our governance, protect our assets, and enhance compliance with charity law, data protection, and contractual obligations. This trustee will play a key role in mitigating legal risks, ensuring regulatory compliance, and upholding public trust, allowing us to deliver life-changing support to the homeless community with confidence and care. Their strategic legal guidance will enable the charity to operate securely and sustainably for years to come.
