At DAR we care passionately that everyone who seeks sanctuary in this country deserves to be welcomed, treated with dignity and supported in navigating life in the UK.  We’re looking for an experienced Legal Advisor to join our Trustee Board

What will you be doing?

We are currently restructuring and strengthening our Trustee Board in order to meet our current challenges of supporting the increasing number of asylum seekers arriving in Darlington every week as well as develop the organisation to deal with the future landscape of the asylum and immigration system and the threats posed by the Illegal Migration Act.

What are we looking for?

  • Leadership Prowess: Demonstrated leadership skills, whether in a commercial business or charity context.
  • Communication Proficiency: Strong written and spoken English skills are crucial for effective reporting and collaboration.
  • Team Player: A collaborative and supportive approach that enables effective teamwork.
  • Influencing Skills: The capability to influence at a high level, persuading stakeholders to support our mission.
  • Empathy and Approachability: You must be approachable and sensitive to the needs and experiences of others, especially refugees and asylum seekers
  • Knowledge of UK Law: Ideally, including Immigration, Data Protection, Charity compliance

What difference will you make?

As a key member of our Trustee Board, you will contribute to shaping our strategy and supporting our Executive Team.  As our Legal Advisor, you would provide advice and guidance on all legal aspects of our work from Data Protection, to Charity Governance and Contract compliance.  Our 75 volunteers are involved in the following activities:

  • Mentoring and supporting asylum seekers to settle here, access services, schools etc and generally help make life more bearable while they await the Home Office's decision on their claim
  • Managing Drop-In Sessions
  • Teaching English
  • Fundraising
  • Campaigning

Your guidance in all these areas would ensure our work is always legally compliant and professional which would improve our ability to raise funds and secure our future

Before you apply

Initial interview will involve a Zoom Chat with one of our Trustees
