Join us and help support a small charity working with adults with learning disabilities
We are looking for new trustees to join our purpose driven and welcoming Board of Trustees in our work to enhance the lives of adults with learning disabilities through music, art, dance, drama, cooking and gardening.
This is an exciting time to join us, with opportunities to contribute and to help shape our future. If you are thoughtful and energetic and want to help make a difference, please apply. We welcome those who have no experience of being a trustee and will provide induction and support. Commitment and enthusiasm is more important.
We want a Board that reflects our community. We are committed to equality of opportunity and welcome applications from all individuals. We strongly encourage applications from the Black, racially minoritized and other under-represented communities, and people with experience of learning disability – either personally, professionally, as a carer or a volunteer. This will help us draw on a wide range of knowledge, interests and skills when making the decisions that will improve the lives of our service users.
We would like new trustees to have some of these interests and skills but not all: Service user engagement, raising funds, digital delivery, helping board meetings to run smoothly and knowledge about learning disabilities.
As a trustee, you will be involved in key decision making to ensure this charity is well managed and delivers a good service for our users. The Board meets 4-5 times a year. There are opportunities for trustees to become involved in projects and working groups.
Stepping Stones is looking for trustees with the following skills and experience:
Digital and IT: Experience delivering online events or digital services/education.
Service User Engagement: Ability to understand and assess the needs of current and future service users.
Learning Disabilities Knowledge: Personal, professional, or volunteer experience with learning disabilities.
Administrative Support: Skills in keeping meetings and discussions focused and on track.
Fundraising: Interest or experience in small charity fundraising.
We are also looking for the following qualities:
Commitment and Enthusiasm: A genuine passion for enhancing the lives of adults with learning disabilities.
Team Player: Ability to work well in a small, collaborative team environment.
Diversity and Inclusion: Open-mindedness and a commitment to equality of opportunity.
Community Awareness: Familiarity with the Southwark/Lambeth area is a bonus but not essential.
Reliability and Responsibility: Prepared to take on the responsibilities of overseeing and guiding the charity.
As part of our board, you will play a key role in supporting and shaping the strategic direction of Stepping Stones, helping us achieve our mission to enhance the lives of adults with learning disabilities through creative and meaningful activities. Your contributions will directly impact the quality and reach of our services, ensuring we continue to empower individuals to gain confidence, develop new skills, and connect with their community in a supportive and inclusive environment.
This is a vital role in helping us sustain and grow our offerings, from music and art classes to gardening and community partnerships. Your unique skills and perspectives will help us adapt to challenges, secure funding, and ensure our services remain engaging and impactful. By joining our board, you will be instrumental in ensuring that adults with learning disabilities, who are often overlooked by society, have access to life-enhancing opportunities and experiences.
Whether you bring expertise in fundraising, digital innovation, governance, or lived experience, your contributions will shape our future and help create a positive, lasting impact on the lives of our service users, their families, and the wider community. Together, we can ensure Stepping Stones continues to thrive and inspire for years to come.
Application deadline is Open There is a short application form for you to fill in and send with a short CV. We also have a confidential Equality and Diversity Monitoring Form (optional and not part of the application). The Chair and other trustees will review applications. You will be asked to provide two suitable references (not family members) from people who know you well.
