Welcome to Reach Volunteering. We are a community and registered charity that connects people, skills and good causes.

To apply for this role, and any other on our platform, you need to be based in the UK, have at least three years of experience using the skills you wish to volunteer in a professional capacity or have lived experience (for trustee roles). Read more about our criteria.

The Whitworth Centre exists for the leisure, recreation and education of the people of Darley Dale and nearby. Our Trustees hold a variety of skills to lead the Whitworth Team in the long-term management of the park and building.

What will you be doing?

As a member of the board of trustees, you’ll be involved in:

  • Setting the Whitworth’s strategic direction, setting goals/targets and monitoring progress
  • Ensuring the effective and efficient administration and financial stability of the Whitworth and its assets
  • Joining a sub-committee or working group of the board based on your skills and experience and contribute to delivering identified priorities
  • Ensuring The Whitworth complies with its Memorandum of Association, charity law, company law and other relevant legislation or regulations
  • Contributing to the appointment, support and monitoring of senior staff
  • Safeguarding the reputation and values of the Whitworth
  • Building closer relationships with the Town Council and other partners and donors
  • Occasionally representing the Whitworth at events and acting as a spokesperson

There are many benefits to becoming a trustee - people say it’s helped them to learn new skills that complemented their professional life, helped them with future aspirations and improved their confidence.

What are we looking for?

We don't expect you to bring lots of previous experience as a trustee, but to enjoy and be successful as a trustee you are likely to have:

  • The ability to operate impartially and objectively
  • Commitment to Whitworth’s vision, values and strategy
  • Proven big-picture thinking ability combined with ability to get to the heart of an issue
  • The ability to network and build relationships at all levels
  • The commitment to devote the necessary time and effort needed for this role
  • Excellent communication skills along with tact and diplomacy
  • An understanding of the responsibilities of charity trustees

We’re looking for three new trustees this year. We’re particularly keen to hear from people who can bring skills in the following areas:

  • Finance and governance
  • Community services and engagement experience
  • Hospitality experience, particularly with events and café
  • People and culture

What difference will you make?

As a trustee, you’ll apply your skills and experience to a range of issues and opportunities. You’ll contribute towards decisions to develop our charity in line with our strategy, vision and purpose. You’ll also ensure our compliance with the Charity Commission and other legal and governance regulations.
