We are looking for a Finance Director / Treasurer to join our Board.

While you'll have some experience in financial management, a commitment to the values of the charity and being a strong ambassador are equally important.

What will you be doing?

Our current long-term Finance Director is stepping down at the end of their term of office (early 2025) and we are looking for someone to shadow and learn the role from our interim director in the meantime.  As we embark on a new 5-year strategic plan, complemented with a fundraising strategy, this is a great time to join our Board!

You'll also be part of the Finance subcommittee which meets with our staff Finance Manager before each Board meeting.

The main responsibilities and duties of this role include:

  • Overseeing and presenting budgets, internal management accounts and annual financial statements to the board of trustees;
  • Leading in the board’s duty to ensure that proper accounting records are kept, financial resources are properly controlled, invested and economically spent, in line with good governance, legal and regulatory requirements;
  • Leading in the development and implementation of financial reserves, cost‐management and investment policies;
  • Liaising, where applicable, with the appropriate member of staff responsible for the financial activities of the organisation;
  • Chairing any finance committee in line with standing orders and terms of reference, and reporting back to the board of trustees;
  • Monitoring and advising on the financial viability of the charity;
  • Overseeing the implementation of and monitoring specific financial controls and adherence to systems;
  • Advising on the financial implications of the charity’s strategic plan;
  • Overseeing the charity’s financial risk‐management process;
  • Acting as a counter signatory on charity cheques and important applications to funders; and
  • Board‐level liaison with the external accountant on specific issues such as the Accounts Review, Agreement Letter and the related board representations

In addition, the treasurer should have the following qualities.

  • Experience of charity finance and fundraising
  • The skills to analyse proposals and examine their financial consequences
  • A willingness to be available to staff for advice and enquiries on an ad hoc basis

What are we looking for?

Financial Management skills:

  • using software (we use QuickBooks)
  • analysing budgets and forecasts

Knowledge of bookkeeping, charity finance and auditing is welcome.

Preparing reports that are accessible and easy to read

Passion for the organisation's values and cultur

Willingness to act as ambassador/advocate for the charity

What difference will you make?

As well as looking at the day-to-day finaces you will be supporting the charity to look at financial sustainability during uncertain times for charities.  We are aiming to diversify its income streams and develop our fundraising over the coming years.

Your scrutiny of accounts working alongside the Finance Manager will be invaluable in supporting the full Board to make decisions around the charity and finance.
