What difference will you make?

Seafarers work in a very unique environment. Often, they are far away from home without the ability to talk to family or friends.

In a Safer Waves 2020 survey, seafarers reported that experiencing gender discrimination or sexual violence had long-term impacts on their health, their careers and their personal lives. The comments from the survey included accounts of seafarers suffering from depression, anxiety, eating disorders and self-harm, as well as accounts of no longer wanting to work at sea, and wishing to change careers in order to feel safe again.

Safer Waves was set up to provide seafarers with an outlet. Somewhere to turn to where they can be sure of being believed and being heard, with the ultimate goal of reducing the long-term impact of abuse at sea.

The organisation aims to reach as many people as possible so that victims can be heard and the risk of violence and abuse reduced.
