Trustee meetings are 2 hours every 6 weeks, plus occasional hybrid meetings. The Trustees work flexibly, recognising this is a volunteer role.

Would you like to support the legacy of one of Cheltenham's most famous inhabitants? We are recruiting new volunteer Trustees to hep us share the stories of the Holst Victorian House, a period home where the composer Gustav Holst was born.

What will you be doing?

Our Board is continually facing challenges to cover the costs of running the Museum and preserving and maintaining the fabric of the Regency building, which is grade II listed, and which we own. We only have two part-time paid staff, everyone else is a volunteer, and, as an independent museum, receive only a small grant from the council. We do have generous supporters and patrons, but want to ensure the long term stability of the Museum and are looking for a Trustee with building and energy conservation skills and experience.

The potential Trustees will be working with a small, friendly team and will also have some leadership or management experience.

What are we looking for?

  • Property management (listed buildings);
  • Facilities Management, including fire precautions, security, health and safety;
  • Building conservation and maintenance;
  • Conservation architecture and/or surveying (relevant to our Museum, which was built in 1832)
  • Governance

What difference will you make?

As part of our Board you would influence and support our work and strategic direction, lead activities and initiatives related to the building, and help us achieve our purpose statements:

  • To understand and respond to the needs of our current and potential audiences in order to deliver an inspiring, informative and relevant visitor experience;
  • To create and share a sense of place, history and identity with our local community;
  • To celebrate the life and music of Gustav Holst;
  • To enhance Cheltenham's visitor economy by delivering a unique heritage experience that appeals to a wide and diverse audience;
  • To care for and develop our internationally significant archive and collections, interpreting them to their full potential in a way that reaches as many people as possible;
  • To ensure the Museum's resilience and sustainability, and safeguard the building and its collections for future generations.

Before you apply

The process is fairly informal and we would meet the applicant and discuss the role, give them a tour of the Museum, introduce them to some of the Trustees and staff, and, if they are interested in the role, decide whether they are the best candidate for the position.
