Deadline

14 Dec 2024

You'll be Trustee of an independent health think tank while also leading a small team of volunteer researchers, exploring more preventative approaches to health issues in the UK.

What will you be doing?

We are looking for a Trustee who can combine membership of the Board of Trustees with a Research Project Management role.

As a Trustee you’ll

  • Ensure we continue to operate within our charitable remit (the advancement of health and the prevention of sickness)
  • Review and approve our Annual Report and Accounts
  • Support and provide advice on our work
  • Attend (virtual) Board meetings

As a Research Lead you’ll use your experience of research projects to lead a small team of volunteer researchers, usually aiming to holistically review published research to identify:

  • The root causes of a potentially preventable health issue.
  • Which approaches internationally are most effective in reducing the health risks, according to published research.
  • How these approaches could be adopted or adapted in the UK, including any existing policy or practice which could be built on and which key stakeholders need to be engaged.
  • Any potential for associated primary research with university partners.

This approach enables us to produce sometimes fresh perspectives to help influence health policy and practice.

You’ll be working alongside our current Trustees, a small team of graduate volunteers, and health research partners (including universities).

As this is a voluntary role you will only need to lead one research project at any one time.

We’ve consciously chosen to operate as a virtual, voluntary organisation. This means that, as a Trustee, you won’t need to worry about staffing or premises issues or about fundraising – although you may wish to help with occasional research grant applications, in conjunction with our university research partners – and there is minimal bureaucracy.

As a virtual, voluntary organisation, meetings are usually via Zoom to enable participation as widely as possible.

What are we looking for?

As a Trustee

  • Enthusiasm for our guiding principle that prevention is better than cure and our belief that health in the UK should be more than a postcode lottery.
  • Ability to exercise good, independent judgement and work effectively as a board member.
  • Willingness to bring energy, expertise and commitment to the role, and potentially broaden the diversity of thinking on our board.
  • Commitment to Nolan’s seven principles of public life: selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty and leadership.

As a Research Lead

  • A postgraduate health-related qualification
  • At least 3 years’ professional experience of leading, coordinating or project managing health-related research teams in the UK
  • Health-related publications
  • A commitment to evidence-based research
  • Good organisational skills and the ability to lead and motivate graduate researchers with diverse backgrounds and experience.

Experience of securing research funding or working in a think tank or a health policy role would be an added recommendation.

Ideally we are looking for someone able and willing to commit 5 -10 hours per week

What difference will you make?

As a Trustee and Research Lead you’ll be making a central contribution to our work as a health think tank - building on work we are already doing to seek to influence health policy and avoid the nation's health being a postcode lottery.

You can help us make a positive difference to the nation's health, through our research, as we work alongside other health organisations to encourage a more preventative approach, to increase people’s chances of living longer, healthier lives. That's important for people and their families, the NHS, social care, employers and wider society.

Conventional charities usually have to commit significant time and resource to fundraising, with all the problems this can sometimes cause. Because we're an entirely voluntary organisation we can focus all our energies on our core work.

Our previous research projects have included how best to:

  • Reduce childhood obesity
  • Reduce the risk of student mental health problems
  • Encourage health at work
  • Protect children and young people’s mental health
  • Encourage healthy ageing across the life course.

Whatever your background, you should have a reasonable chance of living a long and healthy life. Unfortunately, that's not the case in the UK today. Recognising that prevention is better than cure...
