What will you be doing?

We are looking to recruit trustees who are dedicated, can support us with their skills and experience and will ensure that we play the fullest possible role in improving the lives of older people in Powys. We welcome and value the life experience that each individual trustee brings to the governance role.

All trustees have the following duties:

  1. Ensuring Age Cymru Powys complies with its governing document (Memorandum & Articles of Association), charity law, relevant company law and any other relevant legislation or regulations.
  2. Ensuring Age Cymru Powys pursues its charitable objects as defined in its governing document (Memorandum & Articles ofAssociation) and applies its resources exclusively in furtherance of its charitable objects.
  3. Safeguarding Age Cymru Powys's good name and principles.
  4. Maintaining proper governance by ensuring the Board: -

    - agrees the charity’s strategic direction and goals.

    - ensures that risk audits are conducted regularly and that strategies for risk management are in place.

    - ensures that risk audits are conducted regularly and that strategies for risk management are in place.

    - defines the boundaries of management authority and delegates to management the implementation of plans and budgets.

    - monitors performance on a regular basis and holds management accountable for outcomes.

    - ensures that proper processes are in place for the appointment, dismissal and monitoring the performance of the Chief Officer.

  5. Ensures the financial stability of the charity.
  6. Properly represents any agreed Board position or decision when speaking publicly.
  7. Ensures that proper processes are in place to review the Board’s performance annually.
  8. In addition to the legal duties of trustees, each trustee should use their knowledge or experience to help the Board of Trustees reach sound decisions. This will involve scrutinising Board papers, participating in discussions, focusing on key issues and providing advice and guidance requested by the Board on new initiatives or other issues relevant to the area of Age Cymru Powys’s work in which the trustee has special expertise.

What are we looking for?

Do you have 3 years' experience in Governance, Finance, marketing, Fundraising, HR? If so, we would love to hear from you.

  • A commitment to the aims and values of Age Cymru Powys.
  • An understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trusteeship.
  • A willingness to devote the necessary time and effort to their duties as a trustee.
  • Experience to think strategically and creatively.
  • Ability to make sound, independent judgement.
  • Ability to know when to seek professional advice.
  • Ability to work effectively as a member of a team.
  • Commitment to Nolan’s seven principles of public life: selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty and leadership.
  • Desirable to speak Welsh

There are six to eight trustee meetings every year. These take place on weekdays, board papers are produced for each meeting that require reading in advance. Many of our trustees come from Powys, but it's not necessary.

Our work and members of our team are in locations across Powys; our head office is in Newtown. Trustee meetings take place in-person and on-line, reasonable expenses are reimbursed.

Age Cymru Powys supports vulnerable for older people and their families/carers in Powys. Part of the Age UK Network, our advice is quality accredited.

We’re one of the few organisations providing home visits and accessible outreach in communities Powys. 88% of our clients are vulnerable due to disabilities, low income, or social isolation.

Each year we help around 2,500 older people, plus their families/carers, to resolve over 3,000 problems.

Last year we secured over £1.9million of unclaimed benefit payments for older Powys residents.

We provide advice; advocacy; welfare benefits assistance; befriending; and practical help eg nail-cutting and Home Energy Checks. We’ve specialist services for veterans and older farmers. We visit people at home, in care homes, hospitals, and rural communities.

Our Vision:

To live in a society in which all older people are respected, valued and are able to live the life they choose. Age Cymru Powys will work to improve quality of life for vulnerable older people* in Powys.

*All people can be in need of help at certain times of their lives. Older people in need will be those who are isolated geographically, socially or economically in Powys or who have health needs which impact upon their lives. This will be the group for whom our services will be focused. In particular we will focus our services on the 65+ age group.
