Hear Us is Croydon’s Mental Health Service User Group which ensures service users involvement in, the planning, delivery and monitoring of mental health services; helping to improve the quality of the services commissioned and delivered

What will you be doing?

Hear Us is the Mental Health Service User group for the London Borough of Croydon. The aims of Hear Us are to ensure the voices of service users are represented to bring about improvements in mental health services and the de-stigmatization of mental illness. Hear Us is managed by a group of Trustees and day today managing of the charity is by our Co-ordinator. Part of the role of the Co-ordinator is to supervise paid and voluntary staff to ensure that staff have effective guidance and support. Supervision is part of the line management system and communication of the organisation.

Our history of being a user group, going back to 1992; we became a social enterprise in 2001 and became a charity in 2009

Given our current stage of development, it is important for us all to work closely together towards a common goal of success of the charity. Therefore, this is not the sort of Trustee role that requires turning up for the occasional meeting, delivering a few actions and dealing with a few emails. We need our Trustees to be fully integrated and invested in the charity and actively dedicated to its success. You will therefore form an active part of our team. We currently have 7 paid staff, 25 Linkworkers (Volunteers) and around another 25 volunteers that contribute to our the aims of our projects

You are likely to have extensive personal experience of at least one (ideally both) of charity work/governance and mental health.  A large relevant personal network and an ability to raise funds would be very extremely beneficial.

You will also be dedicated to consistently positive and mutually affirming relationships with the Coordinator – based on trust, openness, transparency, true partnership and consistent mutual support and positive regard. You will take joint ownership of ensuring the success of such relationships.

We are looking for pro-active trustees that looking to apply their professional knowledge, experience and enthusiasm about making positive practical, sustained impact on Croydon’s our mental health service user group.

Hear Us Trustees Responsibilities

Duty of Compliance

Trustees must ensure that Hear Us complies with charity law, and with the requirements of the Charity Commission as regulator, that it doesn’t breach any of the requirements or rules set out in its governing document, and that it remains true to the charitable purpose and objects set out there. They must also act with integrity, avoiding any personal conflicts of interest or misuse of assets.

Duty of Care

Trustees must use reasonable care and skill in their work as trustees, using their personal skills and experience as needed to ensure that the charity is well-run and efficient, but also consider getting external professional advice on all matters where there may be material risk, or where the trustees may be in breach of their duties.

Duty of Prudence

Trustees must ensure that Hear Us is, and will remain, solvent, and that the funds and assets are used reasonably and in furtherance of the objects. They must avoid undertaking activities that might place the charity’s funds, assets or reputation at undue risk, and take special care when investing or borrowing funds.

Specific Duties of Hear Us Trustees

Trustees must ensure that Hear Us has a clear vision, mission and strategic direction and is focused on achieving these. The Trustees are responsible for the performance of the charity, its impact upon stakeholders and for its corporate behaviour. They must ensure that Hear Us complies with all legal and regulatory requirements, and act as stewards of assets, both tangible and intangible, taking care over their security and how they are used. Finally, Trustees must ensure that Hear Us’s governance is of a high standard.

Trustees will play a key role in ensuring Hear Us fulfils its charitable objectives. In addition, they will help develop the strategic development of the charity and its service. Hear Us has a proud history of service user involvement and volunteers giving up their time to support their peers; this role is an opportunity to enable their work to continue to flourish and develop.
