Welcome to Reach Volunteering. We are a community and registered charity that connects people, skills and good causes.

To apply for this role, and any other on our platform, you need to be based in the UK, have at least three years of experience using the skills you wish to volunteer in a professional capacity or have lived experience (for trustee roles). Read more about our criteria.

A chance to be part of a small, close-knit committee-led preschool. We're looking for a friendly, team-orientated individual who can help us manage the various financial aspects of the charity and keep it operating smoothly.

What will you be doing?

Typically committee members are drawn from the parent/carer population of those children attending the pre-school, and most serve only for the time their child is there. With between 10-40 children registered at any time, it can be challenging to find replacement members, particularly those with an interest in/knowledge of the financial aspects of a charity to serve as Treasurer.

We are looking for someone with a good baseline understanding of accounts, budgeting and forecasting, who can not only produce these on a regular basis, but is able to do so in a way that is accessible to other members of the committee and staff team. This is critical to improving visibility, knowledge and understanding of the charity's financial position and the options available.

Responsibilities will include reviewing (and adapting where necessary) the processes relating to budgeting, forecasting and financial controls. The pre-school does employ an Administrator who has responsibility for carrying out the day-to-day financial processes, and this role will work closely alongside.

Knowledge of grant-making and payroll would be beneficial, but more important is the ability to apply financial legislation and other requirements in a way that is sympathetic to the fact that the pre-school is a not-for-profit charity, rather than a private/corporate organisation.

Income is determined by the number of children registered, and this varies significantly over the academic year. While responsibility for the charities finances is shared by all trustees, this role will be responsible for drawing attention to any areas of risk or opportunity, and for making recommendations to address or take advantage of these and maintaining the charity's ongoing viability.

What are we looking for?

Experience and/or a good knowledge of managing finances within the third-sector.

A collaborative and inclusive way of working that brings people on the journey, rather than simply presenting an end result. The charity employs a small, well-established team, who share a great deal of beneficial organisational knowledge that needs to be recognised and included when considering and/or recommending any changes.

Friendly and approachable; it's a small set-up in a local community and we're looking for someone who values that.

The ability to present complex information simply, and provide coaching to improve understanding where necessary.

An interest in/knowledge of early education would be beneficial but is not an absolute requirement. Due to the sector in which we operate, you will be required to undergo a full DBS check.

What difference will you make?

The role of Treasurer is really important to us - it provides the reassurance that we are operating the financial side of the charity well, and equips the committee with the knowledge and understanding to make good, sensible decisions that will sustain the ongoing viability of the pre-school.

Before you apply

Please contact us via Reach with any questions. If you'd like to apply, please do so via reach including a short covering note detailing why are interested in the role and think you'd be a good fit for it.
