Welcome to Reach Volunteering. We are a community and registered charity that connects people, skills and good causes.

To apply for this role, and any other on our platform, you need to be based in the UK, have at least three years of experience using the skills you wish to volunteer in a professional capacity or have lived experience (for trustee roles). Read more about our criteria.

We are a small, standalone charity which runs a busy day care centre for the elderly in Orpington. We are currently looking for someone to join us as a Trustee, and take over the role of Treasurer.

What will you be doing?

Age Concern Orpington & District is committed to improving the quality of life of all older people. We believe the older people in our community should be able to lead healthy and fulfilled lives, have access to high quality services and the opportunity to shape their own future and we feel that it is our role to help them achieve these goals.

We aim to achieve these objectives by offering thriving and affordable day care at the Saxon Day Centre, a facility that is almost unique within the borough, and by providing high quality, dignified care and a range of person-centred activities, that support the physical and mental well-being of our clients by reducing loneliness and enabling individuals to maintain their independence within a safe environment. As a result of closures of other facilities, our centre is now almost unique within the local area.

The centre is open on weekdays, with care given by a team of qualified staff, aided by a dedicated group of volunteers and led by the Centre Manager. Clients come to us directly or are referred by local authority social services.

Paid staff are responsible for the day-to-day financial running and management of the charity. The Treasurer provides oversight by:

  • Carrying out monthly reviews and making recommendations to the Board of Trustees on:
    • Budgets and financial plans
    • Statutory accounts and audit
    • Cash management, investments and reserves
    • Accounting policies and procedures
  • Presenting and providing explanations on recommendations to the Board
  • Making a formal presentation of the annual report of accounts at the AGM
  • Providing advice and support to the Finance Officer and Manager, as necessary

We are currently experiencing a  period of change but are also looking to grow the charity and continue to extend the services we provide and so are looking to bring in additional people who can contribute.

What are we looking for?

Financial qualifications and/or experience of finance and budget management. Some knowledge of charity finance is desirable but not essential.

Ideally all of our Trustees will have a background in business or general management and experience of working in a regulated environment. Experience of Health and Social Care is useful although not essential.

Trustees should be able to provide strategic vision, independent judgement and creative thinking and support the objectives of the charity to support the elderly in the local community.

We also look for the qualities laid out in Nolan's seven principles of public life: selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty and leadership

Importantly, we are looking for someone who shares our commitment to Age Concern Orpington & District and its charitable objectives and to the services we provide via the Saxon Day Centre to the local community.

What difference will you make?

The treasurer is a key role within our Board of Trustees, providing oversight of the charity's finances, as well as strategy and advice to the Board.

We know that the services we provide to our clients and their carers and family members are valued and as Treasurer you will  make a significant contribution to the success of the work of charity and the Saxon Day Centre and will help to enable our goal of supporting the quality of life of our elderly clients, including those who are physically frail and/or have dementia and who are in need of a day out from their home environment, or whose carers are in need a day of respite.
