Board meetings every 6-8 weeks (evening), alternating between Edinburgh and Glasgow. 2-3 hours per week expected, varying with role and involvement.

At the Refugee Survival Trust we provide refugees and people seeking asylum with practical support when it is most needed, build connections between people and use what we learn to campaign for change. 

What will you be doing?

We're looking for a Treasurer to join our Board of Trustees. The Board is responsible for governance in accordance with the governing document, legal and regulatory guidelines, making sure RST is focused and sustainable in times of increasing demand for our services and helping set the strategy and guide and oversee charity operations. You will play a key role in oversight of responsible financial management.

The board has people of diverse background and experience sharing our vision of a welcoming, inclusive, safe Scotland for refugees and asylum seekers, where all live free of destitution and can realise their potential. Trustees bring skills essential to the successful governance of the charity along with a willingness to help as needed to promote RST's success. Trustees are also Directors of the Limited Company.

Trustees can help some day-to-day RST operations.

The Treasurer will:

  • lead on any Finance, Audit and Risk sub-committee meetings to discuss finances in more detail
  • work with CEO to explain, guide and advise board on the key assumptions and financial implications of budgets, operational and strategic plans
  • work with CEO to ensure a realistic budget and an appropriate reserves policy that meets our needs
  • support CEO to explain, guide and advise trustees on the consideration and approval of budgets, accounts and other financial matters
  • work with CEO to ensure legally compliant annual accounts are prepared and submitted by deadline to OSCR and Companies House, having been audited or independently examined as required
  • work with members of the operations team to monitor financial position and ensure accessible management accounts are presented at least quarterly so board members understand the accounts and implications

All trustees:

  • work together to provide leadership and strategic direction
  • ensure RST meets its charitable objectives as laid out in the articles of association
  • ensure assets are safeguarded and used efficiently
  • are jointly responsible for finances
  • take on specific roles as required for the smooth operation of the board.

Commitment

Avg about 3 hours a week is requested for at least 2 years. You will attend board meetings, subcommittee meetings, our annual strategy day, AGM and other events. Trustees serve a maximum term of around 6 years.

What are we looking for?

Our Treasurer is standing down from the board, so we're seeking a suitably experienced enthusiastic professional with relevant financial expertise to fill this incredibly important position.

We are keen to recruit people with previous experience of charity or corporate governance. The role would suit someone with strong financial management skills, preferably at a senior level.

Essential competencies:

  • Organisational financial oversight and analysis
  • Financial management and planning
  • Accountancy skills
  • Ability to communicate financial issues to the less financially-literate
  • Knowledge and experience of third sector issues
  • Empathy with refugee and asylum issues
  • Willing and able to promote the success of RST
  • Ability to work as part of the Board to further the organisation’s aims
  • Competent computer user and able to communicate regularly by email
  • Able to exercise independent judgement and take reasonable care, skill and diligence in their role on the Board
  • Willing and able to fulfil the legal duties of a Company director as set out in the Companies Act 2006, and the legal duties of a Charity Trustee

Desirable:

  • Good team-working
  • In depth knowledge of refugee and asylum issues
  • Organisational development / strategy experience

What difference will you make?

RST makes a dramatic difference to the lives of asylum seekers and refugees in Scotland who face destitution and uncertainty. As well as providing practical support in times of need, we also raise awareness of issues affecting asylum seekers and refugees and influence public policy. Your skills and experience will have an impact for good, helping to improve the life chances of people experiencing challenging circumstances.

RST is in an exciting phase of our development, having recently been awarded significant funding to better structure the organisation, including the appointment of a new CEO role. We're in the midst of the second three-year phase of our Destitute Asylum Seeker Service and have a special focus on developing our programme of emergency financial and accommodation support. We've also introduced new programmes that help asylum seekers and refugees make connections with their new communities in Glasgow and gain experience in a work environment.

Your skills and experience as part of a motivated, friendly team, will be central to securing safety and stability for people going through the asylum process.
