CCS is a leading, local, innovative and award-winning charity of passionate local experts, inspiring and enabling positive change for Somerset’s people, places and enterprise. We need your financial acumen!

What will you be doing?

Our teams work where they are most needed, delivering critical personalised support for individuals and communities. During the COVID-19 emergency, CCS Village & Community Agents have supported over 43,000 people in Somerset, carrying out over 75,000 community support activities.

Communities across Somerset rely on our support and we want to be able to do even more to help them. We want to grow our reach into more communities, address a wider range of needs and make an even bigger difference to community vitality and sustainability. Our innovations, such as the Hallmark Quality Standard for community buildings, have gained national recognition and our programmes attract accolades from well-beyond Somerset; for example we are currently finalists in the prestigious Municipal Journal Awards for our Village and Community Agent work throughout the pandemic. Our range of work is extremely varied and further information can be found on our website

CCS has a skills based board comprising a mix of individuals with professional skills and a community focus who are passionate about Somerset. These are challenging times for charities and CCS has successfully adapted into a new ways of working to continue to meet the needs of residents. If you have a clear head, lots of new ideas, drive and ambition you could help us continue our journey.

CCS is specifically seeking an Honorary Treasurer and this role is so important to us - not only do we need someone to help us keep on track financially to ensure future viability, but even more significantly, we are looking for someone to help us formulate our vision for the future. The position will be benefit from a handover from the current incumbent and time with the Finance Manager, Management Accountant and CEO. The Board meets 6 time per year during working hours and additional contributions are encouraged for Strategic Planning days, occasional training and attendance at other events on an ad hoc basis.

We encourage applications from all backgrounds, communities and industries, and are committed to having a team that is made up of diverse skills, experiences and abilities. We actively encourage BAME, disabled and LGBT+ applicants and value the positive impact that difference has on our teams. We are committed to equality and diversity within our workforce and at Board level.

What are we looking for?

We are seeking someone with drive, enthusiasm and a real passion for what we do. You should be able to offer us your time and your financial acumen such that CCS' financial controls remain spot-on whilst maintaining appropriate distance from the day to day operations. You will need to chair our finance committee so experience of running meetings would be an advantage, as would knowledge of charity accounting requirements and charity governance.

What difference will you make?

CCS is at a pivotal point in its history - having successfully transitioned from a past culture of being grant reliant to a new one of being self-sustaining we now need to ensure we maintain this. Getting the balance right between investing to generate income and being lean and cost-efficient is a tricky one.  Whilst we have continued to grow over the last 5 years, the charity funding landscape is and always will be, difficult and we will face even more difficult years to come with rising costs. However, the impact we make on the ground for the most vulnerable in our communities is immeasurable and we are often seen as the "go to" organisation who is willing and able to give pretty much most things a try - working in partnership and collaboration with both statutory and third sector partners.  Trustees joining CCS will be supporting a dedicated staff and leadership team who are able to work proactively and creatively together to make things happen.

The Treasurer will need to demonstrate that they have the same values, the same ambition, and the same desire to help - there's no "box-ticking" at CCS!
