This is an on-going role. The Board meets 10 times a year plus an annual Strategy Day, plus occasional visits to the office.

Help us to manage the financial impact Covid-19 is having on our organisation. Our ability to adapt and evolve to support carers in innovative and flexible ways depends on our continuing financial resilience.

What will you be doing?

Our mission is to provide a range of services that recognises and responds to the individual needs of family carers and by giving them time to take a break from their caring role.  Our Treasurer is retiring and we are looking for a new person who will be able to contribute to ensuring the continuing financial viability and integrity of the charity in meeting our purpose.

As a member of the Board you will work closely with the Chair, CEO and other Trustees on all aspects of the charity's financial management. You will work with and offer guidance to our Finance Manager to monitor the financial administration of the charity.

You will provide the rest of the Board members with regular reports regarding the financial health of the charity.  You will ensure that all financial issues pertinent to the safe and efficient running of the charity are identified and shared with Board members, including budgeting and financial planning advice.

Your main responsibilities would be:

  • budgeting and financial planning e.g. aligning budgetary objectives with strategic plans, monitoring performance, risk management, suggesting alternative scenarios, reserves planning
  • management reporting e.g. liaising with Finance manager and trustees, production of transparent and clear accounting reports
  • statutory financial reporting e.g liaison with external auditors, assistance with production of the annual report
  • governance e.g. lead Board's duty to ensure proper accounting processes and records are kept, controlled and spent in line with regulatory requirements

We would love a volunteer who can:

  • Quickly understand our financial set up / main concerns
  • Help us get to grips with relevant options / approaches / strategies
  • Discuss next steps
  • Follow up with any further questions or outcomes.

What are we looking for?

We are looking for a qualified accountant with commercial awareness and commitment to the future development of the aims and objectives of the charity.

  • Has the ability to quickly understand the needs of/challenges faced by our organisation
  • Has accurate and up to date knowledge and experience of charity finance and other relevant frameworks
  • Is aware of / is willing to inform themself of the latest government support packages for Covid-19
  • Good communication and leadership skills.  Ability to communicate financial information to the wider Board members.
  • Ability to work with a team and contribute to the future direction of the charity.
  • Competent use of IT skills.
  • Understanding of legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trusteeship.

What difference will you make?

As a small charity, Covid-19 has thrown up many challenges and we have needed to review and change the way we deliver services in order to continue supporting unpaid carers.  Our financial health is therefore essential.

With your help we will be able to continue to deliver carers breaks in people's own homes and a range of other support services within the local community.  This will offer the support needed to enable carers to continue with their caring role for as long as they need it.  We are looking beyond Covid-19 and planning for the future and your help input will help us chart these unknown waters together.

What's in it for the volunteer?

We are a small, friendly team which is willing to think outside the box to explore new ways of doing things to ensure the long-term viability of our charity.  You could be part of this and have the opportunity to use your time to make a real difference in new and challenging times.
