Bring your finance/accounting skills to support a small charity working with disabled adults and children in Reading. Help us grow to meet increasing demand, and ensure the ongoing sustainability of this much-valued local service.

What will you be doing?

We are seeking a trustee with a finance/accounting background to help Berkshire Phab grow our service to meet increasing demand, and ensure the ongoing sustainability of this much-valued local service.

You will be helping to set the strategic direction of the charity, as well as leading the financial oversight of the charity, including:

  • reconciliation and oversight of bookkeeping
  • procurement processes and capital purchasing
  • ensuring that staff are paid appropriately
  • budgeting and forecasting annual spend
  • managing relationship with accountants (3rd Party)
  • provision of financial reporting to the board of trustees
  • ensuring that applicable taxes are paid appropriately
  • supporting fundraising activities including preparing budgets for grant applications.

We are a well established charity, having been in the Reading area for over 40 years.  We help disabled and non-disabled people share experiences and socialise, and offer activities designed for all abilities. The purpose-built Berkshire Phab centre opens four days a week as a drop-in club for adults, and on Saturdays for young people in our youth club.

You will join a small but committed board supporting this well-established and sustainable charity that provides an excellent service to disabled users from Reading, West Berkshire, Wokingham and South Oxfordshire.

If you choose to become a trustee we ask that you serve a term of at least 1-2 years.

What are we looking for?

  • Demonstrable experience of financial management.
  • Competent use of IT skills.
  • Proven ability to communicate and explain financial information to stakeholders who do not have a financial background.
  • Analytical and evaluation skills, demonstrating good judgement.
  • Dedicated to the organisation’s cause and objectives.

  • Qualified accountant with demonstrated commercial awareness and knowledge.
  • Knowledge and experience of charity fundraising and finance practices.
  • Willing to act as the charity’s ambassador to external bodies, charities and companies.

What difference will you make?

We have seen attendance grow steadily over the past few years, and an increasing level of support needs among our members as other services in the area have closed over the past few years. Your financial skills will help us grow the service to meet this growing need, seek out funding for additional staff and for improvements to the centre, allowing us to support more people.

What's in it for the volunteer?

You would be joining a small but committed and friendly team to take this well-established organisation, helping us to ensure the sustainability of this much-valued service and taking us forward into the exciting next phase of the charity's development.
