Opportunity description

The Milton Rooms lies at the heart of cultural life in Malton & Norton, used by over 20,000 visitors a year.  A venue for music, theatre and community events, we are seeking a Treasurer to help with the financial aspects of our work.

The role

The Milton Rooms is a community venue at the heart of cultural life in Malton & Norton, used by over 20,000 visitors a year.  The building hosts music, theatre, festivals and community events and is the home of Malton Museum.

The Milton Rooms is working towards a period of change, with plans for a major (£1.6 million) refurbishment of our amazing listed building (part Regency, part Art Deco) and developing as an Arts & Heritage Centre for the south of Ryedale.

We are seeking a Treasurer to fill a highly-important role on the Board. With the support of a professional book-keeper, the Treasurer will ensure that appropriate accounting procedures and controls are in place and create, oversee and present budgets, accounts and financial statements.  The Treasurer will support and guide the Board in making financial decisions.  S/he will ensure that annual accounts are produced and will present the accounts at the AGM, drawing attention to important points in a coherent and understandable way.

It will be essential that the right processes are in place to handle the grant funding for the refurbishment of the building and ensure accurate and timely reporting to our funders.

Our current board consists of a solicitor, who is Company Secretary, and a range of people bringing skills from the local community including marketing, management, IT and HR skills. There are three councillors on the Board representing local councils.

Required skills

  • Accountancy
  • Accountancy (part qualified)
  • Financial management

Person description

Our ideal Treasurer would have formal accountancy qualifications from any field of accounting and would ideally have experience of strategic management. It would be helpful if the candidate had experience of project management as we approach our major refurbishment project, but this is not essential.

We’re looking for someone who can work well with a range of people from different backgrounds.  As a volunteer-run organisation our board has people with differing levels of experience and understanding of operating as a board.

The role would appeal to someone with an interest in arts and heritage, and particularly someone with a passion for old buildings.

The Milton Rooms is completely volunteer-run, apart from one part-time staff member and a cleaner, so the candidate would be welcome to take part in the practical aspects of running the building, but this is certainly not essential – we have lots of people who can work behind the bar but we need someone with financial skills!

What impact the opportunity will have

The candidate would make a major difference to the operation of the organisation by bringing much-needed skills and knowledge to the board, helping the organisation to manage itself successfully as it grows and embarks on a major regeneration project.

S/he would play a key part of rescuing a fascinating listed building at the heart of Malton and developing the Milton Rooms as a centre for the Arts & Heritage to serve this rural community.

What’s in it for the volunteer?

Working with a small, charitable organisation is always a challenge, but can be interesting, stimulating and – yes – exciting.  If you can help us to develop and realise our ambitious plans there will be a huge sense of achievement and the knowledge that you have played a key part in making something happen. There have been plans for this building in the past but this time we are determined to succeed!

The board and volunteer team pull together to bring live music, theatre, dance and all sorts of other events to the small market town of Malton, so you would be part of a very dedicated team that is determined to make good things happen.

Time commitment

Either in or out of office hours

We are moving towards a new system of Board and an Executive Committee, monthly meetings are likely. Time will be needed for preparation of reports.
