As one of our trustees, you will use your financial experience to help us thrive and continue to support people living with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) to manage their condition within a fulfilled life.

What will you be doing?

We are constantly working to improve the lives of people with MS by helping them to help themselves. Our members rely on the trustees to ensure that the MS Therapy Centre provides the best services, free at the point of delivery, in an environment that is supportive and welcoming. In order to do this, we need to ensure that we put people with MS first and that we are financially sustainable.

We need to make decisions about how our resources are best spent, and that our members and staff are working as a team. Your knowledge and experience will help to achieve these aims.  We are particularly looking for a trustee to help enhance our expertise in finance with a view to becoming treasurer.

We hold Trustee meetings every 6 weeks in the early evening. Trustees are encouraged to take part in the life of MS Therapy Centre, for example, by attending fundraising events.

We would like to recruit a trustee who is familiar with SAGE accounting package.

We would encourage you to visit the Centre to see for yourself the impact that our work is having on the lives of people with MS.

What are we looking for?

  • Our trustees may have an interest in, or knowledge of MS, either from personal experience or as a professional, but this is not essential.
  • Our trustees live sufficiently close to the Centre (Bedford) to be able to attend meetings every 6 weeks and to partake in the life of the Centre, or to be involved with fundraising events.
  • Our trustees should have knowledge of the running of a charity or small business, and are able to apply their knowledge to our organisation.
  • Trustees are able to express their opinions in a reasoned manner within a discussion and to commit to the decision of the majority.
  • We would be pleased to recruit trustees who have knowledge of finance, including SAGE book keeping package.

What difference will you make?

We are financially strong, but we wish to maintain our sustainability so that we can reliably deliver uninterrupted therapies to people with the long-term condition of MS. We have been operating for 35 years, and wish to continue for as long as we are needed.

You will help to provide strategic direction for the MS Therapy Centre and support the manager as a critical friend. Collectively the trustees determine the policies and principles that govern the charity.  You will be involved in setting the budget for the year and monitoring income and expenditure, ensuring that the charity complies with charity law and complies with all other relevant legislation, while delivering charitable activities for the benefit of members in accordance with our objectives.

What's in it for the volunteer?

You will immediately see the impact of your work with the MS Therapy Centre. You will work alongside people living with MS, and will spend time in the MS Therapy Centre where we  deliver the therapies. You will be able to get to know the staff and other volunteers as well as the service-users, and feel part of the family in our welcoming and friendly environment.

Before you apply

The application process will initially take the form of an informal visit to the MS Therapy Centre.
