What impact the opportunity will have

There's a lot of unreliable health information online - due to:

  • misleading press releases
  • journalists with limited scientific knowledge
  • newspapers keen to boost circulation through dramatic headlines
  • sponsorship of research by food, drink and tobacco companies
  • alternative health providers eager to sell products and services

And research findings seem to keep changing – for instance is fat a major health risk?

Yet we all know that prevention is better than cure. So accurate, credible health information is vital.

That's why your role will be important - helping ensure we research and provide health information which is clear, accurate, balanced, evidence-based and up-to-date.

What’s in it for the volunteer?

1. An intellectual challenge - identifying which health research findings are reliable and which aren't and how best to communicate them.

2. A chance to make a real contribution to public health in the UK.

3. To be part of a team which is working to improve people's health at three levels:

  • By providing evidence based health information, so people can make healthier choices in their daily lives.
  • By researching health behaviour change and applying our findings - to make it easier for people to act on what they know
  • By campaigning to make healthy choices the easier choices for  people
