We’re looking for a Board Member with property development experience to help us steer the Community Land Trust through its ambitious programme of developing affordable homes for people in housing need in the Somerset area.

What will you be doing?

Building opportunities

Help us create affordable homes for people in housing need. We’re looking for someone experienced in property development preferably in social housing to join our board. This a great opportunity to help us take a step up in fulfilling our aim of developing community-led, sustainable homes for affordable rents in Somerset, BANES & North Somerset.

We currently manage one block of flats, 2 commercial units and have 2 developments in the pipeline for 30+ affordable homes for rent. We will be applying to become a Registered Provider of Social Housing.

Living or working in Somerset, BANES or North Somerset would be an advantage but not essential.

RoleAs a board member you join a new team small of fellow directors, with a broad range of housing expertise and experience. Board meetings are every two months and the Development Committee currently meets monthly all online. As a board member your role is make sure we are governed properly and follow good practice.  You will need to be able to review reports in advance of meetings, as well as assisting with, and helping to oversee development operations.

You will be joining us at an exciting time that is not without its challenges.

We have no employees at present but are supported by a co-operative development agency that undertakes most of our administrative and operational tasks.

What are we looking for?

You will need to be suitably experienced or qualified in property development, and be able to play an active part in ensuring we follow governance good practice and guiding us in to the next phase of our mission.Essential:

  • That you can spare 4-8 hours per month
  • The ability to use your experience and knowledge to make considered judgements
  • To be able to work as part of a team
  • Property development experience

One or more of the following would be beneficial but not essential:

  • Housing development experience
  • Affordable Housing development experience
  • Lived experience in social housing or deprived communities
  • Lived experience and a background from an under-represented community

As part of our board, you will support and shape our work and strategic direction, as well as help us achieve our core purpose of providing more community-led housing for people in housing need.

You will play a vital role in shaping and ensuring we deliver our development programme and gear up to realise it ambitions of addressing housing need in towns across Somerset, BANES and North Somerset.

Your experience and skills will be key to ensuring we meet regulatory, financial and operational challenges of growth, follow good practice, and build opportunities for people in housing need.

With a step-up from the current 4 rented homes to 37 with the two developments in the pipeline, and a largely new board in place, this is watershed moment for the Community Land Trust, your impact will be immediate and profound.
