Our brilliant team of volunteers are carrying out the practical tasks required to create a greenway that is accessible for all. We need volunteers to support them by managing our projects to ensure they run smoothly.

What will you be doing?

The first 3 kilometres of the Greenway are now cleared between Greenhill and Rugley Bridge, and work is ongoing to open up a further stretch beyond Rugley Bridge. By the end of November, the disused bridge parapets will have a replacement bridge spanning them, and the footpath from the track to the road above Rugley Bridge will be cleared and resurfaced. The first phase of approximately 3 kilometres will be cleared, useable and open to the public and will allow a circular route of 5 kilometres along the Greenway to Rugley Bridge and back along Rugley Road to Alnwick.Work to date has ensured the disused railway line is cleared of trees and vegetation, is adequately drained and surfaced and that the line has secure fencing along it to prevent access by grazing sheep and cattle that have historically had access. Access gates are in place to provide access and crossing points along the track. The next phase will require the provision of signage, bins for litter, and the capability to manage the track and keep it free of vegetation.Volunteers have agreed to undertake maintenance activity, including litter picking, etc, but leadership is required in the form of team leaders to take charge of volunteers and provide a local point of contact and supervision. Ideally, such individuals would have a background in managing people, experience in Health and Safety and practical skills necessary to ensure the safe and productive management of the Greenway day to day. 1-2 afternoons or mornings per week would ensure an adequate contribution to the maintenance of the track.

What are we looking for?

Volunteers will have a background in managing people, experience in Health and Safety and practical skills necessary to ensure the safe and productive management of the Greenway day to day.

What difference will you make?

You will join a committed team of volunteers who, together, are realising the vision to create a greenway in Northumberland for everyone to enjoy.

The renovation of former disused railway tracks enables a highly cost-effective way of creating a facility that allows for safe exercise and enjoyment of the natural environment away from cars and provides a valuable use of otherwise unusable redundant former industrial land.

The project will, therefore bring a wide range of benefits to Alnwick and north Northumberland:

  • Increased footfall and income in Alnwick
  • The scope to develop new businesses based on Alnwick’s central position in the Northumberland path network.
  • Health benefits by creating safe and appealing active travel routes – encouraging more exercise
  • Preserving and interpreting the area’s Industrial Heritage and providing new educational opportunities for local young people as well as attracting visitors interested in local history
  • Appealing use of former industrial land, transforming it into a significant local asset
  • Creating opportunities to promote and protect wildlife along the routes.

The project will deliver a clear and positive impact in the local area by:

  • Providing investment in redundant historic infrastructure to create a facility that benefits both locals and visitors to the area and creating an improved traffic free connection to the coast.
  • Investing in green active travel, creating accessible paths, cycle trails and information.
  • Investing in well-being activities.
  • Working alongside local GP practices to promote well-being through exercise.
  • Contributing significantly to the net zero economy of the area.
