Trustee Role Description – Empower Foundation

Empower Foundation is seeking passionate and committed individuals to join our Board of Trustees. Together, we aim to deliver free First Aid and Mental Health training to homeless individuals, rough sleepers, and those at risk of homelessness.

The Role of the Trustee

As a trustee, you will play an integral role in shaping our strategy, providing oversight, and ensuring we fulfil our charitable objectives. You’ll contribute to critical decisions, support operational leadership, and act as a passionate advocate for our cause.

We are particularly looking for trustees who can:

  • Bring professional expertise in areas such as finance, fundraising, marketing, safeguarding, or charity governance.
  • Offer lived experience or insights related to homelessness, mental health, or first aid training.
  • Commit time and energy to drive forward our mission and values.

Key Responsibilities

  • Attend quarterly board meetings and participate in subcommittees as needed.
  • Oversee financial and operational performance and ensure compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Support and challenge the team to achieve our goals effectively and ethically.
  • Help secure funding and build connections within relevant networks.

Specific Roles Available

We are particularly looking for trustees with expertise in the following areas:

Treasurer

  • Oversee the charity’s financial management, ensuring transparency and sustainability.
  • Work closely with the leadership team to review budgets, manage financial risks, and monitor performance.

Social Media/Marketing

  • Drive our digital presence to build awareness and engagement.
  • Create innovative campaigns to attract beneficiaries, donors, and supporters.
  • Monitor and evaluate the success of our social media and marketing efforts.

Fundraising

  • Develop and implement creative fundraising strategies.
  • Build relationships with donors, sponsors, and grant providers.
  • Support grant applications and organise fundraising events.

What Impact Will You Have?

As a trustee, your work will directly transform lives by equipping vulnerable individuals with life-saving skills and empowering them to rebuild their futures. You will help us reach more people, secure vital funding, and create lasting change.

What are we looking for?

We are particularly keen to hear from individuals with:

Skills and Expertise

  • Finance and Accounting: Experience in managing budgets, financial planning, and ensuring transparency and sustainability. This is especially important for those interested in the Treasurer role.
  • Fundraising: Expertise in developing innovative strategies, securing grants, and building relationships with donors and sponsors.
  • Marketing and Communications: Knowledge of social media, digital marketing, and campaign development to increase awareness and engagement.
  • Safeguarding: Understanding of safeguarding practices and policies, particularly for vulnerable populations, to ensure our work is ethical and effective.
  • Charity Governance: Familiarity with legal and regulatory requirements in the charity sector, ensuring the board operates within its responsibilities.

Experience

  • Lived Experience: Insights from personal or professional experiences related to homelessness, mental health, or first aid training are highly valued and bring depth to our work.
  • Strategic Leadership: Proven experience in strategic planning, decision-making, or governance in either the charity or corporate sector.
  • Community Engagement: Experience building partnerships, networking, or working within the communities we serve.

Qualities

  • Passion for the Cause: A genuine commitment to Empower Foundation’s mission and values, with a desire to create positive change.
  • Collaborative Approach: An ability to work as part of a team, contribute to discussions, and respect diverse perspectives.
  • Innovative Thinking: A forward-thinking mindset with the ability to offer fresh ideas and creative solutions to challenges.
  • Integrity and Accountability: A commitment to acting ethically, taking responsibility, and ensuring high standards of governance.
  • Time and Commitment: The ability to dedicate sufficient time and energy to the trustee role, including attending board meetings and supporting subcommittees or projects as required.

If you have the drive to shape brighter futures and empower some of society’s most vulnerable, we encourage you to join us in this exciting and rewarding opportunity.

What difference will you make?

As a trustee of Empower Foundation, you will play a crucial role in transforming lives. Your contributions will help us deliver life-saving First Aid and Mental Health training to some of the most vulnerable members of society—homeless individuals, rough sleepers, and those at risk of homelessness.

Your decisions and expertise will directly impact how many people we reach and how effectively we empower them with the skills and confidence to handle emergencies, protect their mental health, and regain stability in their lives.

By strengthening our governance, shaping innovative strategies, and supporting our funding efforts, you’ll help ensure the sustainability of our work and enable us to expand our services to more communities.

Through your role, you’ll be an essential part of a mission that doesn’t just provide training but offers hope, dignity, and a chance for brighter futures to those who need it most.

Together, we can break cycles of vulnerability, improve lives, and create lasting change. This is your opportunity to make a meaningful difference.

Before you apply

Please apply through Reach in the first instance. Shortlisted candidates will be asked to complete our additional application form and interviews are due to take place in February 2025 over Zoom.
