Trustees of MASH, play a crucial role in shaping the strategic direction of the organization and ensuring its effective governance, within its ethos of Self Help. 

What will you be doing?

Key Responsibilities:

  • Governance and Oversight: Ensure MASH operates within its legal and regulatory framework, adhering to charity law and best practices. 
  • Strategic Leadership: Contribute to the development and implementation of strategic plans and policies. 
  • Financial Management: Oversee the financial health of the charity, including approving budgets, ensuring proper financial controls are in place.
  • Risk Management: Identify and manage potential risks to the charity.
  • Fundraising and Resource Development: Support fundraising efforts and help identify and secure resources to sustain MASH’s activities.
  • Advocacy and Representation: Act as an ambassador for MASH, promoting the charity’s work and building relationships.
  • Team Collaboration: Work effectively with fellow Trustees and the executive team, attending board meetings, contributing to discussions and decision making.

What are we looking for?

Skills, Knowledge, and Experience:

The following skills, knowledge and criteria will be advantageous; we do not expect candidates to cover all elements:

  • Commitment to MASH’s Mission: Genuine interest in supporting individuals with asthma and we especially encourage those with a lived experience of asthma.
  • Governance Experience: Experience in governance roles, preferably within the charitable sector, including charity operations, HR and compliance.
  • Financial Acumen: Understanding of financial management, including budgeting, financial reporting, and resource allocation.
  • Strategic Thinking: Ability to think strategically and contribute to the long-term planning and direction of the organization.
  • Communication Skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills, and ability to effectively engage with stakeholders. 
  • Technology and Social Media: IT Implementation and operations experience aligned to optimising the charity's resources and brand presence.
  • Teamwork: Proven ability to work collaboratively within a team

MASH has operated for approaching thirty years and is unique in terms of its free advice services. All trustees are both baton carriers, helping sustain MASH's self help ethos for the community of Medway, and flag waivers to ensure MASH's offering is known widely amongst professional healthcare professionals and community members. Asthma can be well managed and the difference that can make to sufferers and close family's lives is immense.

Before you apply

An initial conversation with one of the trustees, followed by completion of the MASH trustee application form and finally a trustee interview (conducted via Zoom). Final appointment will require provision of two references and agreement by the majority of the board of trustees.
