What will you be doing?

We are currently conducting a review of our Organisation, sustainability strategy, resource needs and funding requirements for the medium to long term future. We require a volunteer HR expert, hopefully to join our Board, to assist in the initial review and recruitment activities and then with the ongoing development and improvement of HR policies and resourcing of our projects.

We currently have six volunteer directors and are looking for a seventh director to lead on HR. Our accounts are filed at Companies House.

Key responsibilities: 

  • Lead an HR audit of the organisation and develop a HR plan and strategy to ensure compliance and good working practice in the organisation.
  • Develop, implement and
    • - maintain robust HR policies and procedures to meet R&M’s needs.
    • - lead R&M’s recruitment policy and procedures for staff and Directors.
    • - lead R&M’s induction procedures for new staff, their managers and Directors.
  • Provide support and guidance around staff annual leave recording and calculating.
  • Support the manager to manage absence, disciplinaries, grievances, sickness etc. , ensuring fair and reasonable processes are followed.
  • Provide support and guidance to those in line management roles within the organisation.
  • Ensure 
    • - HR records are maintained in line with GDPR requirements.
    • - R&M’s HR policies and procedures are in compliance with UK employment legislation.
  • - Areas of concern regarding HR organisational compliance or are reported to the Board of Directors in a timely manner for care and consideration.
  • Prepare and present HR updates to the board every 6 weeks.

What are we looking for?

Key skills and experience we are looking for are;

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills: Colleague and service user support, spoken and written communication.
  • HR qualifications
  • IT skills: experience in using Excel, Word, PowerPoint Outlook
  • Administrative skills: experience in administration contracts, correspondence and documentation. 
  • HR management experience
    • Developing and implementing HR policies, procedures and working manuals
    • Employee relations: resolving HR issues between management and staff including employment disciplinary procedures
    • Payroll administration (entering data, verifying final reports)
  • New employee recruitment and selection:  from recruitment to on-boarding that include communication, handling paperwork, verification of documents, help decision making and follow up.
  • Performance management: coordinating with various teams to complete processes

What difference will you make?

This role, working alongside other directors, will lead on HR management for Refugees & Mentors. Enabling the organisation to: 

  • better manage our resources and work towards sustainability. 
  • ensure that R&M also recruits and manages staff and volunteers to the high standards expected from UK employers. 
  • present a professional performance in HR matters to partners organisations, UK Employers, potential funders and our service users 

There is a gap in specialist employability support for refugees and vulnerable migrants, but the unemployment rate for these groups is higher than the local population overall. Work is crucial for people to be able to rebuild their lives in the UK.
