  • Beaver and Cub Leaders are volunteers who plan, deliver, and support an amazing programme for young people.  They can volunteer flexibly. Some may give their time every week, while others may give on a less frequent basis.

What will you be doing?

We are looking for people to join our Beaver or Cub Leadership Teams.  We have two Beaver Colonies and two Cub Packs, so hopefully there is a day and time which suits you to join us:

Beavers meet on Mondays and Fridays, 18:20-19:20 in Westbrook Library

Cubs meet on Mondays, 18:15-19:30 and Fridays, 18:30-19:45 at St Philips Community Primary School, Westbrook

What will you be doing?

There are lots of benefits to being a Leader, including:

  • Helping young people gain skills for life.
  • Having easy, fun, and accessible learning opportunities, so they can gain knowledge on how to volunteer with young people and adults in a safe and inclusive way, develop skills through volunteering, and grow in confidence.
  • Volunteering as part of a team and sharing tasks based on skills, interests and availability. This may include taking on specific tasks through accreditations.

Depending on their skills and interests Beaver and Cub Leaders will be:

  • Working directly with young people in the Beaver Colony (6-8 year old) or Cub Pack (8-10½ years old).
  • Helping others to work well together and feel motivated in Leadership Teams.
  • Supporting our volunteers and programmes across the Beaver, Cub and Scout (10½-4 years old) sections, including some joint events.
  • Helping make Scouts an inclusive and welcoming place that's open to all.

What are we looking for?

Beaver and Cub leaders need a variety of skills and experience, including leadership, communication, and planning. They should also be able to work with people and manage their time.

  • Visionary skills: The ability to imagine different ways of doing things and communicate them to others
  • Management skills: The ability to plan, organise, and implement
  • People skills: The ability to engage with others in a safe, constructive, and meaningful way
  • Self-management skills: The ability to reflect, learn, and stay motivated

Communication skills

  • The ability to express your views, listen to others, and understand what they're trying to say
  • The ability to communicate clearly with people of different ages

Planning skills

  • The ability to plan activities that suit the beavers or cubs and follow Scouts' rules and policies
  • The ability to set objectives, plan tasks, and allocate responsibilities

Other skills

  • The ability to work in teams
  • The ability to support others in their roles
  • The ability to value others for their skills and abilities
  • The ability to manage large projects and groups of people

What difference will you make?

Scouting has been a global leader in youth development for over a century, focusing on building leadership skills that prepare young people for the complexities of life.

Beavers and cubs are young people, aged 6 to 10½, who:

  • Master new skills and try new things
  • Have fun and go on adventures
  • Make friends
  • Are curious about the world around them
  • Help others and make a difference, on their own doorsteps and beyond
