Looking for a fulfilling role where you can use your skills, experience, and creativity? Join our friendly, active trustee team at York Women’s Counselling Service and help us further develop our service and reach more women in our local community.

What will you be doing?

How about becoming a trustee of York Women's Counselling Service?

At York Women’s Counselling Service our mission is to provide high quality counselling for women* experiencing problems as a result of emotional stress or trauma, when they need it, for as long as they need it and regardless of their ability to pay.

We are seeking enthusiastic women from the private, public or charitable sector who would like to join our present trustees to help guide and support our team. By contributing your time, skills and experience, you will help us create new opportunities to expand our work and offer an ever more effective service in our local community.

We are particularly interested in applications from women with experience in counselling or psychotherapy, and operational HR experience, as well as women with broader skills in fundraising, finance, comms or operational management and more.  As we look to diversify our Board, we welcome applications from first-time trustees and from under-represented groups to help YWCS reach all parts of our community.

Over the past two years YWCS has undergone a transformation of our processes and expansion of our services and this year we were proud to receive the King’s Award for Voluntary Service in recognition of our outstanding work.  We are now in a strong position to consolidate and develop our offer for women in York.

YWCS is a small and friendly charity and our work is guided by our core values and our commitment to promoting wellbeing and a positive organisational culture.

* It is an important part of our ethos that we offer a secure women-only environment where counselling is provided by women therapists in a service overseen by dedicated trustees who are also women. Sex and gender are key to the way we experience life and the difficulties we face. For women who have experienced trauma through sexual or domestic abuse or through physical violence a women-only service provides a protected space in which they can feel physically and emotionally safe. For some women who come to us their specific gender, religious or cultural needs can only be met in a women-only service.

What are we looking for?

We are looking for enthusiastic, positive and committed women. We are particularly keen to receive applications from women with skills and experience in counselling or psychological therapy.

Other desirable skills and experience include:

  • Operations management, particularly HR
  • Fundraising, including grant writing and organising community fundraising activities, corporate sponsorship/partnership
  • Communications, including experience and skill in using IT

What difference will you make?

Through a combination of strategic insight and support for our staff team, you can help us further build our services and provide good governance so that more women can receive the support that they need and deserve.
