Coaches work one-on-one, providing individualised support to our unemployed clients who are either searching for work (Career Coaching) or preparing to attend a job interview (Interview Preparation.)

What will you be doing?

Coaches deliver Career Coaching Sessions and Interview Preparation Sessions either in person or on-line; both sessions last one hour and are tailored to the clients needs. We provide booklets to clients for each type of appointment, these can also be used by the coach to structure the session. Career Coaching sessions typically focus on CV and Cover Letter support as well as work with the client to identify three goals that they can work on at home to get them to the stage where they have secured a job interview. Once a client has secured a job interview, they can return to us for a First Dressing and Interview Preparation Session where the coach will spend time preparing the client for her upcoming interview; checking that she has researched the organisation's values but also ensuring that the client is clear on her skills and strengths and knows how to talk about these confidently. The coach should go over the STAR technique with the client and help her to establish some answers to competency-based questions. The coach also might want to suggest that they practice a mock interview. We are not very prescriptive about how the session is conducted and every coach has their own style and way of bringing their own skills and experience into the session.

What are we looking for?

Coaches are required to have HR, Coaching or Senior Management experience as well as knowledge of interview techniques and recruitment practices. We look for approachable, empathetic and empowering volunteers.

What difference will you make?

The impact of this work can be instant as well as long lasting; often coaches see an increase in a client's confidence by the end of her appointment. Job interviews can be challenging and a significant barrier to success. Without the necessary self-belief and practical tools, it is easy to become trapped in a cycle of failed interviews and unemployment. Our coaches help our clients to realise that she is worthy of the job she is applying or interviewing for and prepare her to confidently demonstrate her skills and qualities. Volunteers are notified when their client secures employment; which can mean financial security for herself and her family as well as increased confidence and hope for the future.

Before you apply

We ask that volunteers complete our application form (which can be accessed on our website) and send to our Volunteer Co-ordinator with a copy of your CV or work history summary.
