Welcome to Reach Volunteering. We are a community and registered charity that connects people, skills and good causes.

To apply for this role, and any other on our platform, you need to be based in the UK, have at least three years of experience using the skills you wish to volunteer in a professional capacity or have lived experience (for trustee roles). Read more about our criteria.

Use your skills to support a charity offering young people life skills, adventure and a sense of purpose through activities and community service.   We rely on donations so saving on professional fees is invaluable.

What will you be doing?

The volunteer will perform an independent examination of the charity's accounts for 2024-25 as per the Charity Commission's Directions and guidance for examiners.  Helpful Charity Commission docs are:-

>> CC32 - Independent examination of charity accounts: Directions and guidance for examiners

>> CC32a - Recommended checklist for independent examiners

An independent examination is a form of external scrutiny that provides a check on specific matters. The examiner is then required to confirm whether any material matters of concern have come to their attention.

The volunteer will liaise with the charity's treasurer and trustees as required though the task can be completed remotely/online.

What are we looking for?

  • Independence: Must be independent of the charity to ensure objectivity and impartiality.
  • Financial awareness: Strong numeracy and an understanding of accounting principles.
  • Relevant experience: Practical experience with ‘receipts and payments’ accounts
  • Knowledge of charity accounting: Familiarity with fund accounting, trustee responsibilities and governing documents.
  • Analytical ability: Capable of reviewing financial records, identifying unusual items and recognising potential concerns.
  • Ability to understand, and willingness to familiarise themselves with, the Legal Requirements: Knowledge of the Charities Act, independent examination Directions (CC32) and reporting regulations.
  • Attention to detail: Able to compare financial records with accounts and spot discrepancies or non-compliance.
  • Preparation and planning skills: Able to liaise with trustees, agree responsibilities, and schedule the examination efficiently.
  • Communication skills: Able to clearly report findings to trustees and the Charity Commission when necessary.
  • Integrity and professionalism: Acts with reasonable skill and care, respecting confidentiality and regulatory duties.

What difference will you make?

Feltham and Hounslow Sea Cadets - offering local young people valuable life skills, adventure and a sense of purpose through team activities and community service - relies heavily on donations and grants to keep our activities affordable and to maintain our facilities and equipment.   Any saving on professional fees allows us to re-direct those sums into investing in Cadet activities and facilities.
