Welcome to Reach Volunteering. We are a community and registered charity that connects people, skills and good causes.

To apply for this role, and any other on our platform, you need to be based in the UK, have at least three years of experience using the skills you wish to volunteer in a professional capacity or have lived experience (for trustee roles). Read more about our criteria.

Citizens Advice Charnwood is looking to recruit a Trustee to lead on Human Resources. We are a small but important local charity providing a valuable service to our community.

What will you be doing?

  • To review and recommend current and future strategic resourcing, training and development and annual budgets and plans to the trustee board.
  • To actively contribute to policy setting, strategic direction, goal and target setting, and evaluate performance against targets, budgets, plans and charitable objectives.
  • To ensure that HR activities and interventions are linked to the company’s charitable objectives and complement the company culture.
  • To ensure the Trustee Board monitors and reviews the performance of the company’s Chief Executive, rewards performance accordingly and identifies appropriate development opportunities.
  • To monitor the financial position of the charity and its operations within its means and objects, making sure that there are clear lines of accountability for day-to-day financial management.
  • To monitor whether the service complies with its governing document and standards and if the needs of the beneficiaries are being met.

What are we looking for?

We are looking for a trustee who will come with enthusiasm, commitment and an interest in our work. Our Board guides the organisation's operations so that we offer a supportive and effective service as widely as possible throughout Charnwood.  We meet every two months (currently online) for a quick review of activities, before moving on to planning future activities, agreeing budgets and progressing the business plan, working closely with the management team. Your role will be as an active member of the Board, participative and questioning. You will be asked to work within a sub-committee or project group according to your expertise and interests. We would give you a mentor who would support you through the first few months, and help you understand the charity's operations and its processes.

We would like to hear from people with the following experience and qualities::

  • Experience of performance management, HR/employment law issues and implementing them contextually.
  • Willingness to actively participate in discussions concerning needs of company’s beneficiaries, staff and the trustee board.
  • Willingness to act in the best interest of the charity.
  • Sound, independent judgement and ability to think creatively.
  • Working effectively as a team member and demonstrating a willingness to learn and develop.

Additionally, the following would be desirable:

  • Strong intellectual and analytical ability; innovative thinker and ability to focus on issues requiring action.
  • Experience in financial management and social media.
  • Experience in the charitable or voluntary sector.
  • Experience of charity law and governance.

What difference will you make?

We need to widen our perspective, our view of what is needed by the people of Charnwood, by adding trustees of varying ages and backgrounds. You will bring a fresh pair of eyes to what we are doing, and potentially a new set of thoughts and ideas. Every board member plays an important role, and your input will add to that mix and blend of thinking that results in good organisational management. And your perspective may be representative of a section of the public that we may not have included properly before. Come and make the difference!
