Could you get to grips with the circumstances of applicants in financial hardship?  Check their grant eligibility – identify any underlying issues – suggest goods/services/suppliers to improve their situation – and follow through to delivery.

What will you be doing?

General & Financial Management:

  • Responsible for managing grant applications and for transactions involving beneficiaries and/or suppliers.
  • Accountable for any money invoiced, received, banked, paid out etc.

Communications & Reporting:

  • Deal with incoming applications by email (webmail account) or by post (P.O. Box).
  • Keep applicants (and sponsoring care/support workers) informed of progress/decisions.
  • Report to the Trustee Board and contribute to the Annual Report.

Application Processing:

  • Maintain controls and a register of all applications received.
  • Check the eligibility of all applicants.
  • Check the completeness, coherence and reliability of information supplied, and seek extra information where necessary.
  • Suggest/recommend goods, services, suppliers etc as appropriate, noting associated costs.
  • Participate in Trustee Board meetings which consider applications.

Grant Processing:

  • Make arrangements for any goods, services & payments to be ordered, delivered & paid.
  • Liaise with the Clerk regarding all financial transactions.

What are we looking for?

  • Good awareness of state benefits and/or debt management.
  • Interpersonal skills - interacting with applicants and with their sponsors (care/support workers).
  • Business-like approach to dealing with suppliers.
  • Computer literate - email, correspondence, spreadsheet records, reporting.
  • Some experience of managing finances within an organisation.
  • Interested in developing business processes for scaling-up operations.
  • Good local knowledge - geography, agencies and suppliers.

Useful Skills/Knowledge: General/office management, debt management/advice, bookkeeping, household budgeting, assessing need, sourcing goods and services locally, computer literacy (e.g. email, word-processing, spreadsheets), awareness of state benefits.

Before you apply

The charity does not have a separate application form.  However, all short-listed volunteers will be asked to attend an interview and must complete a Declaration of Interests form.  In addition, each appointment to an Officer role with access to personal information or charity funds is subject to the receipt of satisfactory references, and may be subject to a basic or other DBS check.

The successful candidate must sign a Declaration form undertaking to act in the best interests of the charity, to respect the confidential nature of personal and sensitive information held by the charity, and to abide by all policies, resolutions and decisions of the Trustee Board.
