We are looking for a geographical analyst that can correlate volunteer data with a variety of on-line databases so that we can help individuals and groups to make the most of their location for marketing and campaign purposes.

What will you be doing?

We are an educational charity engaged in networking and campaigning about today’s environmental issues. Our LitterNet project is a cross sector network set up to bring people together, change behaviour around litter and help cut the flow of single use plastic into the ocean. The network comprises individuals, groups, and national organisations across the UK. We want to engage with individuals and groups locally, so they can interact where they live, but also on a larger scale geographically.

We would like the volunteer to help us correlate the relevant data using GIS and publicly available databases to refine our marketing and campaigning efforts. This is to a certain extent an experimental role and would suit an open minded volunteer with programming and GIS skills. This would involve:

  • Understanding the scale of what we are trying to achieve.
  • Develop and/or execute algorithms to help us support local people in their campaigning efforts
  • Provide guidance/strategy on how we can take this forward

You will be working with one of our trustees who will provide any background material you will need.

What are we looking for?

We are looking for a volunteer who:

  • Is skilled in programming languages used in GIS development and web mapping
  • Has a basic understanding of climate issues
  • Has the ability to quickly understand the needs of our team / organisation / users
  • Can ask key questions to enable us to clarify requirements
  • Understands the resource constraints of a small charity and can work within these.

What difference will you make?

With your help will make our project more focussed and efficient by using modern technology, and at the same time broaden our grasp and understanding of its potential.

What's in it for the volunteer?

This would give you the opportunity to experiment and stretch your skills in a real world setting. You would become part of our small, friendly team, using your time to make a real difference in difficult times and to contribute your ideas to help individuals become more effective in what they are trying to achieve.
