It Gets Better UK, works to inspire and empower LGBTQ+ youth

What will you be doing?

It Gets Better UK envisions a world where all LGBTQ+ youth are free to live equally and know their worthiness and power as individuals. We strive to tell the stories of LGBTQ+ people and to provide positive and reassuring messages to LGBTQ+ youth.

The It Gets Better Project was founded in 2010 in America, since then affiliated charities have been formed in 19 different countries. We are now at the exciting stage of developing the UK version, formally launching later in 2018.

We want to ensure that people are able to fully engage with our mission. Innovative thinking is at the heart and we are looking for dynamic individuals who will challenge, help shape the future and support the delivery of the organisation.

To that end, we are looking to appoint a trustee with experience in finance to oversee our budgets, providing advice, scrutiny and support to the charity.

The role of the trustees will be to support and contribute to the Board, giving strategic direction, defining goals and setting targets while evaluating our performance. Alongside this, you will ensure that the organisation complies with the necessary legislation and regulations associated with the charity sector.

Where do you come in?

We are seeking candidates who bring strong governance skills and experience of senior leadership, as well as a proven record of significant achievement in your own field, ideally within a substantial or complex organisation, used to operating at a strategic level, confronting challenges and facilitating initiatives. We also seek individuals with a broad range of influencing and enabling skills, who display keen judgement, and give evidence of facilitating strategic transformation. A commitment to It Get Better’s mission, Vision and Values, and a willingness to devote time to carry out responsibilities are critical.

What are we looking for?

  • Dedicated to the organisation's cause and objectives
  • Qualified accountant with demonstrated commercial awareness and knowledge
  • Competent use of IT skills
  • Proven ability to communicate and explain financial information to members of the board and other stakeholders
  • Analytical and evaluation skills, demonstrating good judgement
  • Understanding and accepting of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trusteeship
  • Good communication and leadership skills

  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience of charity fundraising and finance practices
  • Skills and experience in one or more areas of non-executive governance and management e.g. strategic planning, business management.
  • A team-orientated approach to problem solving

What difference will you make?

As a relatively new charity having launched last year we are in an exciting time of continuing to grow and develop. We are keen to advance our expertise on the board in particular around Finance to ensure that we have the maximum impact.

What's in it for the volunteer?

With these responsibilities come the satisfaction and empowerment of knowing that your commitment will make a direct difference to It Gets Better UK and help inspire and empower LGBTQ+ youth.
