Visitors from Fifth Day

Welcome to Reach Volunteering. We are a community and registered charity that connects people, skills and good causes.

To apply for this role, and any other on our platform, you need to be based in the UK, have at least three years of experience using the skills you wish to volunteer in a professional capacity or have lived experience (for trustee roles). Read more about our criteria.

Advising Trustees on financial strategy & fund raising. Maintaining accounts. Outreach to the community.

What will you be doing?

The church faces a number of challenges in maintaining and increasing regular income; meeting the Diocesan Parish Share target; the need for an active fund raising profile and to maintain the church buildings in good order, all whilst reaching out effectively to the wider community. The goal would be to seek financial stability and reducing the deficit over time whilst building the income through innovative ventures.

The Finance Director's role would be to advise the Vicar and Trustees of the Parish regarding financial responsibility, seeking ways to boost income and reduce spending whilst maintaining the church's overall vision. The role as Treasurer would be to keep accounts and make a periodic Finance Report to the Trustees. Weekly banking and payroll management are carried out by a different person.

A person with accounting experience would be ideal. Also the ability to see beyond the immediate figures and envisage how changes could be made. The Treasurer would be a team member reporting to the Vicar and Churchwardens but able to operate independently. Meetings of the Church Council are held every other month and a brief report would be needed but not necessarily always in person.

What are we looking for?

Essential skills are the ability to be organised, keep accounts and present them in an understandable way. A visionary person would be an advantage with the ability to present ideas in a coherent way. The applicant needs experience in formulating accounts acceptable to the Charity Commission. An ability to be able to listen to others and presnt their own views even if they run contrary to those of others. The applicant needs to be willing to work in a small team regularly communicating with the Steering group. It would be a help if the person was able to see ahead and be able or have the experience of influencing policy.. Experience of fund raising would be an advantage.

A Christian belief or openness to faith would be an advantage but is not essential. Safeguarding has become a mjor part of church policy and it would be a requirement that the applicant should undergo a DBS check and take part in the Church's Basic and Foundation Safeguarding Training.

What difference will you make?

As Finance Director this would be an innovative departure from the previous role of only being Treasurer and would be an opportunity to help guide the activities of the charity into the future. As Treasurer this is an important role to observe, interpret and report financial trends. The Treasurer would be an important member of the Church Steering Group comprising the Vicar, Churchwardens & Lay Vice Chair thereby influencing policy.
