Shape Surrey’s cultural landscape as our Events Organiser. Plan, coordinate, and elevate poetry events that inspire, connect, and celebrate community creativity across the county.

What will you be doing?

What will you be doing?

As Events Organiser for the Surrey Poet Laureateship, you will take the lead in planning and delivering inspiring, inclusive poetry events across the county. These may include performances, workshops, competitions, school visits, and community showcases.

In addition to one-off and seasonal events, you will also play a crucial role in maintaining our flagship initiative Poetry Hubs. These regular community meet-ups are central to our mission, and you’ll help ensure their smooth operation by supporting lead facilitators, tracking attendance, and managing behind-the-scenes logistics that keep the hubs thriving and visible.

You’ll coordinate with poets, venues, volunteers, and partners to bring our creative vision to life, ensuring each event, whether large or small, is impactful, well-run, and aligned with our values.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Planning and delivering events, from concept to execution
  • Coordinating with venues, facilitators, performers, and the wider team
  • Managing timelines, communications, and logistics
  • Promoting events in collaboration with marketing volunteers
  • Supporting and maintaining the Surrey Poetry Hubs
    • Tracking attendance
    • Assisting facilitators where needed
    • Ensuring smooth coordination and visibility
  • Ensuring accessibility and inclusion at every stage
  • Capturing feedback and evaluating event success

This is a creative and hands-on role, ideal for someone who loves making things happen and wants to help put poetry at the heart of Surrey’s cultural life.

What are we looking for?

What are we looking for?

We’re looking for someone enthusiastic, organised, and passionate about bringing people together through the arts. You don’t need to be an events professional—we welcome applicants with transferable experience and a genuine commitment to community and creativity.

Essential skills and qualities:

  • Strong organisational and planning skills
  • Good communication and teamwork abilities
  • Able to manage schedules, logistics, and people calmly and efficiently
  • Comfortable working both independently and collaboratively
  • Reliable and proactive in solving challenges as they arise
  • Experience organising or supporting community or arts events
  • Familiarity with Surrey’s cultural landscape
  • Interest in poetry, literature, or spoken word
  • Confidence using spreadsheets or basic admin tools
  • Experience supporting ongoing programmes or regular meetups

You’ll need to be able to reliably commute to our HQ at the Literary Institute building in Egham, and be available to attend events across Surrey when required (with plenty of notice and flexibility).

We welcome applications from individuals of all backgrounds who are excited to help shape a vibrant cultural movement through poetry and shared experience.

What difference will you make?

What difference will you make?

As Events Organiser, you’ll be central to how people across Surrey experience and engage with poetry. Your work will bring communities together, elevate local voices, and turn creative ideas into powerful, inclusive public events that inspire, entertain, and connect.

By overseeing both major events and our flagship Poetry Hubs, you’ll help sustain the core engine of our outreach, creating welcoming spaces where poetry can flourish in every corner of the county. Your support will allow facilitators and performers to focus on creativity, knowing the logistics are in safe hands.

Your impact will be seen in every workshop filled, every verse shared, and every person who leaves feeling more empowered through the power of poetry.
