The Engineering Team requires members in all sectors and is keen to hear from any engineers wishing to support its restoration activities, in developing desk studies, undertaking technical analysis, coordination or to supporting site activities.

What will you be doing?

We would like engineers, who have different skills, to join our team restoring all 70 miles of the Wilts & Berks canal.  We would like to share these opportunities with people who are interested in canals and passionate about making the canal corridor accessible to everyone.

What are we looking for?

Some of these skills would be very useful:

  • Good knowledge of general office software and reliable internet access
  • Team working with engineers and other volunteers
  • Passion for making the canal corridor accessible to the everyone
  • CAD or drawing skills and software would be useful
  • Experience of design and preparing specifications
  • Local knowledge of canal route
  • Understanding of how a canal operates
  • Knowledge of design and/or construction techniques
  • Working as a member of a multidisciplined team
  • Appreciation of costs and risks
  • Previous experience of same
  • Commercial awareness and contracts background
  • Ability to negotiate agreements

Previous experience of working with:

  • Environment Agency
  • Councils, planners and environmental groups
  • Landowners
  • Ability to present a case and defend proposals
  • Preparation & interpretation of drawings and specifications
  • Ability to visit working sites
  • Basis survey skills
  • Awareness of temporary works
