RST makes a dramatic difference to the lives of asylum seekers and refugees in Scotland, many of whom face destitution at times. We also influence public policy. Your skills and experience could make a dramatic difference to the board.

What will you be doing?

We're looking to add a Digital Trustee to our friendly and supportive Board. Trustees help ensure RST is effective, focused and sustainable in times of increasing demand. They guide and oversee the operations of RST, our small and committed staff and our many volunteers.

We need someone to help us see the role digital should play in our future strategic and operational development. You will bring your expertise to all board discussions and decisions, and ensure we see the digital aspect. Digital could impact our service design and delivery, our fundraising, our policy work, our interaction with supporters and clients ... every aspect of what we do and how we do it.

The Digital Trustee will:

  • Consider and understand how digital can help RST achieve its purpose and deliver its goals, covering all aspects, including fundraising, communications, service delivery and operations;
  • Articulate both benefits and risks and champion digital to the board to inform strategic thinking;
  • Promote the use of data in board discussions to make evidence-based strategic decisions;
  • Draw on your networks to support RST's work;
  • Help ensure that staff have the digital capabilities they need to implement the strategy;
  • Oversee and support staff in RST's digital activity.

Trustees in general will:

  • Work together to provide leadership and strategic direction;
  • Ensure that RST meets its charitable objectives as laid out in the articles of association;
  • Ensure that RST is effectively run and meets all of its legal and regulatory requirements;
  • Ensure that assets are safeguarded and used efficiently for those for whom we exist;
  • Ensure that the organisation is accountable financially and in other ways; and
  • Take on specific roles as needed for the smooth operation of the Board of Trustees and the organisation.

Commitment

A minimum commitment of two years is requested, and RST’s constitution means that Trustees serve a maximum term of around 5 years.
 

What are we looking for?

We're seeking a suitably experienced, enthusiastic, high-level professional to bring a digital focus to the board at an exciting time for RST. You should have wide knowledge of digital in the real-world context. Your professional environment should give you access to resources to supplement your broad knowledge and a useful network of contacts (both strategic and to seek help with specific short-term digital tasks). You should also be a good communicator, able to translate both digital and charity jargon to bridge any understanding gap both ways. You should be keen and able to empower the board. We would like ideally to recruit someone with previous experience of governance, board-level management and the third sector.

The board is made up of people with a variety of backgrounds and experiences who share our vision and who bring a range of skills essential to the successful governance of the charity, offering leadership, strategic direction, financial management and general oversight, along with a willingness to help as needed to promote the success of the Refugee Survival Trust.

The Board is responsible for developing RST's aims, objectives and goals in accordance with the governing document, legal and regulatory guidelines. Trustees can also take on roles related to the day-to-day running of the organisation. RST is an incorporated charity, and its Trustees are also Company Directors.

  • Willing and able to fulfil the legal duties of a Company director as set out in the Companies Act 2006, and the legal duties of a Charity Trustee

What difference will you make?

You could have a fundamental and hugely beneficial impact on the way we develop over the next few years. Digital increasingly cuts across all aspects of work and life, and the same is true for RST. We have many and varied skills among the trustees, but no-one yet with the broad digital skills and background needed to give the board confidence and edge in this area.

Without our trustees, we wouldn't be able to continue the fantastic work RST started in 1997.

We are in an exciting period, with a recent dramatic increase in demand for our services, particularly to counter destitution. We've recently finished the first three-year phase of the Destitute Asylum Seeker Service and have achieved significant funding allowing us to start the next multi-year phase of the project. We've introduced new programmes that help asylum seekers and refugees make connections with their new communities in Glasgow and gain office skills.

We want to renew our focus in future on research and advocating for policy improvement.

We want to make our services more widely available across Scotland.

However, the economic situation means that funding is incredibly tight and we need to make sure that RST is working in the best possible way to achieve our aims. This means that the board needs to be suitably skilled and engaged as we work through the process of strategically reviewing and planning our work. Your skills and experience as part of a motivated, friendly team, will be central to this process of strategic governance.
