We aim to bring deaf kids together to build confidence, self esteem & above all have fun!
Connecting with others is essential to our mental health, it improves our feeling of well being and reduces isolation and loneliness. Meeting other deaf kids can be a new experience for some and it is an important part of developing their identity.
We run half-day events each half term for deaf children and teens. These range from indoor climbing to chocolate making to adventure golf and we are hoping to run a residential in 2025. The events are a fantastic way for deaf young people to meet each other as many are in mainstream schools and have no contact with other deaf kids. Families are often included and this provides an opportunity for them to chat with other parents and feel relaxed knowing that everyone understands. We are a team made up of experienced professionals who have worked with deaf children and adults for many years, hearing aid users and parents of deaf children.
We would love to engage more deaf people and their families as volunteers, as well as anyone who loves to communicate with others or has experience of working with children.
The primary aims for the volunteer are to communicate with the kids and their families, get involved in the activities and support the children to have fun and connect with others. There may be specific roles that are required for the event and we are keen for volunteers to contribute their own ideas.
You will be given a Volunteer Leader who will be your main point of contact.
We are looking for people who are friendly and keen to get involved. We would love to welcome people who are deaf or have a hearing loss themselves. A knowledge of BSL is great but not essential. This role is ideal for those in a career as a speech and language therapist, teacher, audiologist or working with children and young people.
You will see deaf children and young people come 'out of their shell', feel excited by what they have achieved and proud of themselves for having a go. You will make the children and their families feel part of a great community and keen to do more together.
