On the hunt for a committed soul to help plug Rare Charity's funding gap, so that we can continue to support the emergence of skilled professionals in one of the world's most vulnerable communities.

What will you be doing?

As for so many charities, Coronavirus has depleted our sources of funding dramatically. It is vital that we survive this period of uncertainty, so that we can continue to deliver our scholarship programmes in one of the world's most vulnerable countries. We anticipate that Malawi's Thyolo community will be even more vulnerable once it emerges from the crisis, and we will need to be in a financial position to support as many young people as possible as they return to formal education.

Rare Charity is having to stay nimble and creative to adapt to a changing landscape, but with only 1 paid staff member time is short and resources are at maximum capacity.

We are looking for an experienced fundraiser to help us raise funds urgently. You will be working closely with Daisy, the Managing Director, to develop a clear fundraising strategy to put to the Board. You will then be working on delivering the programmes which play to your strength, so that Rare Charity can plug its funding gap and continue to develop its super reputation.

We suggest the following areas as priorities, but are not restricted to them:

  • Bid-writing for grants from trusts and foundations
  • Online campaigns and events
  • Pitching for partnerships with companies
  • Galvanising and coordinating our existing supporters and fundraisers

What are we looking for?

Essential Skills:

  • Capacity to deliver online: excellent knowledge of social media, email, video conferencing
  • Willingness and time to commit to an excellent cause
  • Versatility
  • Creativity
  • Sense of humour

Nice to have:

  • A successful track record in bid-writing for trusts and foundations
  • Excellent communication skills in written and spoken English
  • Easy manner and good presentation by phone and on video conferencing
  • Confidence in dealing with a spectrum of people and industries
  • Experience in events management
  • Knowledge of social media traction and growing an online presence
  • Knowledge of the African continent
  • Sensitive, thoughtful approach to international aid work
  • Ability to make enquires about fundraising opportunities by phone, email, letter or by filling in forms
  • Reliable attitude, keep appointments, update the branch regarding your availability
  • Respect for tea

What difference will you make?

Rare Charity has one part-time employee. The charity is in urgent need of a fundraiser so that the Managing Director can focus on strategic management, delivering operations, accounting and marketing. Your work will be invaluable to the short-term survival and long-term growth of a small but ambitious charity delivering vital programmes to one of the world's most vulnerable communities.

What's in it for the volunteer?

This is an opportunity to work for a small charity making an immense difference to individual lives. You will hear from our scholars regularly, and witness the impact of your work. Our very first scholar Osman wrote on his graduation: “Rare Charity has really served me as family. Whatever I was doing, I had it mind that somewhere some people were standing with me.”  We would be delighted to welcome a new family member!

On top of that, we are closely supported by the fantastic Rare Tea Company and the indomitable Rare Tea Lady herself, Henrietta Lovell. A more inspiring Chair of Trustees is hard to find, but be warned: boy, she can swear.
