There will be regular meetings with the local Branch Chair.

The role is to help with the development of community engagement and partnerships between the Trust and community organisations along the Canal’s route to facilitate the Trust's objective to promote wellbeing and education.

What will you be doing?

The CPO has the authority to initiate dialogues in accordance with the Trust’s strategic and tactical objectives and as communicated by the directors and Branch Chairs.

  • Setting up engagement activities with schools, uniform groups and local charities to understand their needs and translate that into partnership activities with the branches and sites.
  • Working to engage with Parish Councillors, area boards and Officers in the specified areas, to make and keep them fully aware of the Trust’s objectives and the ongoing assistance needed from such bodies for the achievement of public benefits in education, wellbeing and leisure.
  • Preparing and circulating monthly project progress reports for the Branch Chair in accordance with the Trust’s reporting standards.
  • Attending the monthly Branch meeting to report on the status of Community engagement and partnering projects being managed by the CPO.
  • Maintaining good relations with CPOs in other branches of the Wilts & Berks Canal Trust and attending any cross-Trust meetings to coordinate best proactive and knowledge sharing.
  • Keeping volunteer members informed about projects by means of the electronic communications tools available to all Branches from the Executive.

The CPO will need to interface with the following in the course of his/her duties:

Internal:

  • The Branch Chair
  • Directors
  • Other CPOs
  • Community engagement taskforce or other trust meetings as required

External:

  • Schools, uniform groups and local charities
  • Parish councils and area boards

What are we looking for?

We are looking for someone who is interested in canals and what they bring to the wider public and the environment.  A good public speaker would be useful especially as we would like to liaise with schools throughout our area.  Confidence in approaching Councils, schools, Area Boards and charities.  Retired teachers, retired public officers and retired military personnel would make excellent candidates along with others who have similar skills.

What difference will you make?

Your input will shape how we present ourselves to our service users, stakeholders, funders, general public and school children. With your help we will be able to continue our restoration of the Wilts & Berks Canal for the benefit of the public and the environment.
