Chairman of the Wiltshire Victoria County History Trust, researching and publishing a history of the entire county, parish by parish.

What will you be doing?

The Wiltshire Victoria County History Trust (WVCH) is looking for a successor to David Moss, our current Chairman, who wishes to retire.

WVCH researches and publishes the history of the county, parish by parish. Some 18 volumes of the planned 25 have been published. Another two are imminent. Work is underway on another and the remaining 4 volumes have yet to start. These are highly detailed and important records of our county, published as prestigious ‘red’ books and also available on line.

The Trust:

  1. raises money, with which it
  2. pays researchers whom it commissions to research and write up the history of parishes in Wiltshire.

There are about 15 trustees who meet 3 times a year and there are 2 supporting groups: the Fundraising Group and the Project Group, which plans the use of available funds, selecting suitable researchers and monitors progress with the research contracts. Both supporting groups meet about twice a year. For more information on the Trust visit: https://www.wiltshirehistory.org

The Chairman of the Trust chairs meetings of trustees and of the Fundraising Group and is also a member of the Project Group.

The role is:

  • To lead development of fundraising plans – particularly planning of summer garden parties and of programmes of talks given each year by means of Zoom webinars.
  • To drive the completion of the final volumes of the Wiltshire publications
  • To liaise with the Patron (Sarah Rose Troughton, Lord-Lieutenant of Wiltshire) and the President (Michael Wade, OBE) on raising the profile of the WVCH and on attracting support from major sponsors.
  • To make the returns to the Charity Commission and ensure that WVCH activities comply with charity law and other regulatory requirements.
  • To represent WVCH to the outside world and to the Institute of Historical Affairs in the University of London, which co-ordinates VCH activity around the country and publishes completed volumes.

What are we looking for?

Common sense and an ability to get things done are the main requirements. Experience of running charities and of fundraising would help, and an interest in history would give it all focus.

What difference will you make?

As Chairman, you will have the pleasure of leading the project further towards its completion and of seeing new research into Wiltshire's history written up, published and made available for all who are interested.
